Chapter 2 - The Audit of Souls

Eleanor didn't look at the crowd. She glided down the marble steps with the innate majesty of a queen reclaiming a throne. Every billionaire in the room bowed their heads as she passed, desperate to catch her eye, completely oblivious to the silent execution taking place at Table One.

She reached the microphone, looking directly at the shivering Mercer family.

"Good evening," Eleanor said, her voice smooth, resonant, and dripping with an authority that left no room for dissent. "For six years, I have lived among you under a different name. I wanted to see if the world could offer honesty without a price tag. I wanted to see if a family could love a woman for who she was, rather than what she owned."

She paused, her gaze locking onto Adrian, whose face had turned the color of ash.

"Instead, I found a family that treats kindness as weakness. I found a husband who mistook my silence for insignificance, and who used my anonymous investments to build an ego so large he forgot where his wealth originated."

The ballroom erupted into furious whispers. Heads turned toward Table One.

Savannah frantically tried to pull her hand away from Adrian’s arm, but her fingers were trembling so violently she dropped her clutch purse, scattering lipstick and mints across the floor.

"Eleanor... please," Adrian stammered, stumbling out of his seat and taking a desperate step toward the stage. "There’s been a misunderstanding. I... I can explain. Savannah is just an assistant—"

"Silence, Mr. Mercer," Mr. Callahan snapped, stepping between Adrian and Eleanor like a wall of granite.

Eleanor raised a single, diamond-ringed hand, and the room fell deathly quiet.

"You told me tonight, Adrian, that before you, I was a nobody from a small town," Eleanor said softly, her words slicing through the silence like a scalpel. "You told me I deserved the life you gave me. The truth is, the house you sleep in, the cars you drive, the firm you run, and the very watch on your wrist belong to the Vale Dominion Group. And tonight, I am collecting my debts."
