Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Caldwell Enterprises

The trial of Ethan Caldwell was the talk of Manhattan for the next three months.
Every financial news outlet carried the story of the golden boy of real estate who had tried to systematically defraud his billionaire father-in-law, only to be outmaneuvered by the very wife he had dismissed as a "flair for drama."
During the final deposition, I sat across the table from Ethan. He was wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to the steel table, his face gaunt and aged by a decade.
"Why didn't you just leave?" Ethan whispered, his eyes hollow as he stared at me. "If you hated me that much... why didn't you just sign the papers?"
"Because you wanted to leave me with nothing, Ethan," I said, my voice echoing in the quiet visitor's room. "You wanted to take my dignity, my inheritance, and my peace. You thought because I was pregnant, I was vulnerable."
I slid a single document across the glass partition.
"This is the final liquidation order for Caldwell Enterprises," I said. "Every asset your family owned has been dissolved. The proceeds have been placed into a permanent, irrevocable trust for Christian and Victoria. They will grow up in the very buildings you tried to steal from them. But they will never carry your name."

Ethan closed his eyes, a single, heavy tear falling onto the steel table. "I'm sorry, Grace."
"Save your apologies for the parole board, Ethan," I said, standing up and turning my back on him. "You have thirty years to think about your mistakes."
