Chapter 1 - The First Mistake

The first mistake Ethan Caldwell made was assuming the lipstick belonged to his mistress.
The second was believing that Grace’s father, August Vale, was still in London.
The third—and most fatal—mistake was assuming the silence of the operating room was a sign of his victory.
"Step away from my daughter, Ethan," August Vale’s voice did not rise, yet it possessed a terrifying resonance that cut through the shrill, frantic beeping of the fetal monitors.
Ethan spun around, his hand instinctively dropping from his phone. His polished, arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered his composure, adjusting the lapels of his charcoal suit.
"August," Ethan smooth-talked, though his voice carry a slight, nervous edge. "What a surprise. I didn't think you'd make it back across the Atlantic in time. As you can see, Grace is... well, she’s having a bit of an episode. The doctors have everything under control, but I’ve been here supporting her—"
"Liar," Dr. Melissa Harper snapped, her gloved hands still working frantically at the foot of the bed. "Mr. Vale, your son-in-law has spent the last twenty minutes verbally abusing your daughter while she is actively hemorrhaging. He needs to be removed immediately."
August did not look at Ethan. He walked directly to the side of the bed, his heavy cane tapping rhythmically against the sterile floor. He took Grace’s cold, trembling hand in his own, his fierce, storm-gray eyes softening as he looked down at her pale face.
"I'm here, Gracie," August whispered, brushing a damp strand of golden hair from her forehead. "The red light is on. Everything is recorded."
Grace let out a ragged, shallow breath, a faint, victorious smile touching her pale lips. She released her grip on the mattress rail, letting the small black transmitter button slide into her father’s hand.
"August, really," Ethan scoffed, crossing his arms. "If you're going to let her play these pathetic games, we're going to have a serious issue. I am her husband. I have the sole legal authority to make medical decisions for her and my children."
August slowly turned his head. He looked at Ethan the way a predator looks at a minor nuisance before the strike.
"Your children?" August murmured.
He raised the leather document folder in his left hand, tapping it against the chrome bedside table.
"This is a certified prenatal DNA report, Ethan. Generated by the genetic oncology department of this very hospital using the amniotic fluid collected during Grace's emergency admission three weeks ago."
August opened the folder, pulling out a single sheet of paper stamped with a federal forensic seal.
"You see, Ethan, when you were busy spending 'corporate development' funds on jewelry for Vanessa Whitmore, Grace was quietly documenting your medical history. She found the records of your selective vasectomy from five years ago. The one you had before you married her, to ensure you would never have to split your father's inheritance with an heir."

Ethan’s face went entirely white. His hand flew to his pocket, his fingers twitching.
"The twins Grace is carrying are healthy, vibrant, and biologically hers," August said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "But they carry a 0% genetic match to you. They were conceived via a private donor trust we established in London. You are not their father, Ethan. You are a legal stranger to this room."
