Chapter 2 - The Red Lining of the Ledger

The operating room fell into an icy, absolute silence, broken only by the rhythmic puffing of the ventilator.

Ethan’s chest rose and fell rapidly. He looked from August to the pale, silent woman on the table, then to the DNA report.

"That's... that's fraud," Ethan stammered, his polished veneer completely disintegrating. "She cheated on me! I'll ruin her in the press! I’ll file for adultery! The Caldwell name—"

"The Caldwell name is currently trading at forty-two cents on the penny, Ethan," August cut him off, his tone entirely conversational. "My acquisition team purchased the remaining debt of Caldwell Enterprises at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Your father’s board of directors is currently holding an emergency meeting to strip you of your executive title."

Ethan’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket.

He pulled it out with a shaking hand. It wasn't Vanessa this time. It was his father, Arthur Caldwell.

He swiped to answer, his voice high and panicked. "Dad? Dad, listen, August is here—"

"You stupid, arrogant boy," Arthur Caldwell’s voice roared through the speaker, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. "What did you do to Grace?! The Vale Group just called in our commercial loans. We're insolvent! The marshals are at the corporate office! They have a warrant for your arrest for interstate wire fraud!"

"Dad, no! The assets—"

"They're gone, Ethan! You signed the security authorizations using the joint marital accounts! She had co-signing authority, and she transferred the collateral to a blind trust last week! You've ruined us!"

The call went dead.

Ethan dropped the phone. It clattered against the tiled floor, the screen cracking directly across the face of a text message from Vanessa that read: Where are you? The police are at my apartment.

"You thought Grace was the weak link in your chain, Ethan," August said, leaning heavily on his cane as he stepped closer. "But she was the architect who drew the blueprint for your prison. Now, get out of my sight before I let my security detail explain the physical consequences of trespassing in a Vale-owned facility."

Two of the dark-suited men with clear earpieces stepped into the operating suite, their massive frames completely blocking the exit. They did not touch Ethan; they merely stood there, their eyes fixed on his chest, waiting for a reason.

With a choked, pathetic sob of terror, Ethan stumbled backward, nearly tripping over his own discarded phone, and fled through the double doors into the sterile corridor, his expensive cologne trailing behind him like the scent of a dying empire.
