Chapter 4 - The Keycards Go DeadSilence filled the penthouse bedroom—a thick, suffocating silence that felt heavier than the storm from the night before.

Julian stood frozen in the middle of the room, the phone pressed hard against his ear. The world around him seemed to slow down, the color draining from the imported Persian rugs, the crystal chandeliers, and the marble walls.
"E-Elena?" Julian stammered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched register that he had never used in his life. "What kind of sick joke are you playing, Robert? Elena is a penniless graphic designer! I threw her out into the rain last night with twenty dollars in her pocket! Her family is nobody! Her father is a retired—"
"Julian, I am looking at the legal instruments right now," Robert interrupted, his tone turning desperate and clinical. "The Escalante Family Trust was established thirty years ago. They didn't just finance Azure Bay—they own the land patents, the architectural blueprints, the international trademarks, and every square inch of physical property from here to Zurich. You didn't build this empire, Julian. You were put in charge of running it under a probationary management contract that required absolute marital and fiduciary compliance."
Probationary management contract.
The words echoed in Julian’s ears like a death sentence.
"No," Julian whispered, backing away until his legs hit the edge of the bed. "No, that's impossible. I signed the deeds! My name is on the front lobby plaque!"
"Your name is on a decorative brass plate that can be unscrewed by maintenance in five minutes," Robert said grimly. "Julian... we're locked out of the financial servers. The federal regulators are already reviewing the asset transfer. Unless you have millions of dollars in personal cash stashed somewhere that isn't tied to the corporate entity, you are officially bankrupt."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Julian dropped his phone. It hit the hardwood floor with a dull thud, the screen cracking into a spiderweb of glass.
Behind him, the rustling of sheets indicated that Chloe was waking up. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, her golden hair cascading over her shoulders as she yawned gracefully.
"Jules? What’s going on?" she murmured, her voice laced with morning sleepiness. "Why are you standing there like that? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Julian turned slowly to look at her. The woman who had spent the last eighteen months whispering poison in his ear, encouraging him to cast Elena aside, looking at him with mild annoyance because he had interrupted her sleep.
"Get up," Julian said, his voice barely a breath.
Chloe blinked, frowning. "What? What are you talking about?"
"Get your clothes on," Julian snapped, panic finally snapping his self-control into a manic frenzy. "We are leaving. Now."
"Leaving? Where? What about the European investors? What about my spa appointment?"
"The resort isn't ours, Chloe!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking as he lunged forward and grabbed her arm, jerking her out of bed. "We don't own the penthouse! We don't own the bank accounts! We are ruined!"
Chloe stared at him, her eyes wide with shock and sudden, burning disgust. She wrenched her arm out of his grip with a sharp jerk. "Are you out of your mind?! Have you been drinking all night? Ruined? You're a billionaire, Julian Vance! Don't take your corporate stress out on me!"
"I'm telling you the truth!" Julian yelled, grabbing his suit pants off the chair and stepping into them with frantic, shaking hands. "Elena... Elena is the owner! Her family owns everything!"
Before Chloe could process the sheer absurdity of his words, a sharp, electronic chime echoed through the penthouse.
Ding-dong.
Julian froze. Chloe stared toward the heavy oak entryway.
"Are those... housekeeping?" Chloe whispered, her voice trembling.
Julian walked cautiously out of the bedroom, his bare feet padding across the marble hallway toward the foyer. He reached for the brass handle of the front door and pulled it open.
Standing in the hallway was not housekeeping.
It was the resort’s head of security, flanked by two armed federal marshals and Arthur Pendelton, the silver-haired chief of staff from Escalante Global Holdings.

Arthur held out a pristine, leather-bound portfolio. He didn't smile. His eyes were cold, professional, and utterly devoid of mercy.
"Mr. Julian Vance," Arthur said clearly, his voice carrying down the hallway. "By order of the Board of Trustees of Escalante Global Holdings, your executive authorization has been formally terminated. You have exactly thirty minutes to vacate the premises."
