Chapter 3 - The 6:00 AM AwakeningThe golden rays of the early morning sun broke over the horizon, painting the Pacific in shades of amber and rose. At Azure Bay, the resort was beginning to stir. Staff members in crisp uniforms unlocked the garden gates, kitchen chefs prepared the morning artisan pastries, and the lobby began to fill with the soft murmur of high-paying guests preparing for breakfast.

In the penthouse, Julian stirred. He stretched luxuriously, kicking off the silk duvet, and glanced at the digital bedside clock.

6:00 AM.

Beside him, Chloe was still fast asleep, her breathing soft and even. Julian smiled, feeling an immense surge of satisfaction. Today was a big day. At 10:00 AM, he had a high-stakes meeting with international investors to secure funding for the new European branch. With Elena out of the way, there would be no nagging reminders of caution, no tedious spreadsheets pointing out cash flow risks. Just pure, unadulterated expansion.

He swung his legs out of bed, walking across the custom hardwood floor toward the en-suite bathroom to start his morning shower. As he passed the wall-mounted master control pad for the penthouse, he noticed something odd.

The screen, which usually displayed a glowing green status indicator reading SYSTEM OPTIMAL, was flickering with a harsh, unyielding crimson light.

Julian frowned, stepping closer. He tapped the touchscreen to bring up the climate control and lighting menu.

Instead of the menu, a stark, formal system notification flashed across the display in bold white letters:

ACCESS DENIED. USER IDENTITY UNRECOGNIZED. PLEASE INSERT MASTER ADMIN CREDENTIALS.

Julian scoffed, shaking his head. "Damn resort IT department must be running a routine patch," he muttered to himself.

He swiped his personal fingerprint scanner located beside the door frame—the biometric override that granted him unrestricted access to every luxury feature in the building.

The scanner beeped a harsh, double-toned red error.

BIOMETRIC PROFILE NOT FOUND IN ACTIVE REGISTRY.

A cold trickle of sweat ran down the back of Julian’s neck. He stared at the scanner, his heart giving an uneasy flutter. "What kind of glitch is this?" he muttered angrily.

He pulled his smartphone off the wireless charger on the nightstand to call the head of resort security. His fingers flew across the screen, unlocking the device. He tapped the speed dial for the estate manager.

The phone didn't ring. Instead, a full-screen pop-up notification seized his entire display, overriding his home screen completely:

CRITICAL SECURITY ALERT: ACCOUNT FROZEN UNDER DIRECTIVE OF ESCALANTE HOLDINGS TRUST. ALL LINKED FINANCIAL INSTRUMENTS, CORPORATE CREDENTIALS, AND ASSET PRIVILEGES HAVE BEEN REVOKED INDEFINITELY.

Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. Escalante Holdings? What the hell did Elena’s family have to do with this? Her father was a retired bureaucrat. Why was corporate software recognizing a name he hadn't heard in years except as Elena’s maiden surname?

Before he could process the thought, his phone buzzed violently in his hand. An incoming call from his corporate chief financial officer, Robert Vance—no relation, but a longtime loyalist.

Julian swiped answer immediately, his voice sharp with rising panic. "Robert! What the hell is going on with the IT network? My biometric access to the penthouse is locked, and some absurd error message about an 'Escalante Trust' just bricked my phone software—"

"Julian," Robert’s voice didn't sound like a CFO giving a status report. It sounded like a man standing on the edge of a cliff during an earthquake. "Listen to me very carefully. Do not leave the penthouse."

"What are you talking about?" Julian barked, pacing across the carpet. "Fix the damn servers! I have the European investors arriving in four hours—"

"The European investors pulled out thirty seconds ago," Robert interrupted, his voice shaking. "In fact, every single institutional investor just liquidated their positions across all four branches. Julian... I don't know how this happened, but our primary operating accounts have been entirely wiped clean. Every penny in the corporate reserve was transferred at 5:59 AM to a primary holding entity in New York."

The room seemed to tilt sideways. Julian’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. "Wiped clean? That's impossible! We have three billion in assets! Check the secondary reserves! Check the credit lines!"

"The credit lines are closed, Julian," Robert whispered, the terror bleeding clearly through the speaker. "The banks aren't answering my calls. When I tried to access our main ledger system, my login was rejected. My administrator profile... it was deleted. Not deactivated. Deleted. By order of a primary shareholder whose clearance level supersedes the CEO."

"Whose?!" Julian roared, his face turning crimson, his veins bulging at his temples. "Whose clearance level supersedes mine?! I am the founder! I am the CEO!"

There was a heavy, suffocating pause on the other end of the line.

Then Robert said a name that sent a paralyzing shockwave straight through Julian’s chest.

"According to the unsealed global trust registry that just hit the wire... the primary shareholder, the sole legal owner of Azure Bay, and the absolute holder of every corporate asset is registered as..."

May you like

Robert swallowed hard.

"...is registered as Elena Escalante."
