Chapter 6 - A Promise Kept

Two years later.

The church bells of St. Mary’s in Zurich rang out across the valley, their deep tones echoing over the blue lake.

Inside the quiet, sunlit sanctuary, soft candlelight flickered against ancient stained-glass windows depicting angels and roses.

Alessandro and Genevieve stood before the altar, dressed in simple, elegant clothes.

Between them stood Clara, now nearly three years old, wearing a small white lace dress, holding a tiny bouquet of daisies in her hands, looking up at her parents with wide, curious eyes.

Father Thomas, an elderly priest with kind eyes, closed his prayer book and looked at the couple.

“Alessandro Romano,” Father Thomas said, his voice resonant in the quiet church. “Do you take Genevieve to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?”

Alessandro looked down into Genevieve’s eyes—the same eyes he had seen through the rectangle window of Delivery Room 4, the eyes that had once looked at him with terror, now filled with absolute, unshakeable trust and deep love.

“I do,” Alessandro said, his voice clear, strong, and steady. “With all my heart, with all my soul, and with every breath I have left.”

Father Thomas turned to Genevieve. “And Genevieve, do you take Alessandro to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

Genevieve reached out, her fingers lacing through his, taking the silver wedding band she had once left on his desk in Southampton—now cleaned, polished, and glowing in the candlelight—and sliding it back onto his finger.

“I do,” Genevieve whispered, her voice thick with happy tears. “Always.”

“By the power vested in me,” Father Thomas declared with a warm smile, “I now pronounce you husband and wife once more. You may kiss the bride.”

Alessandro didn't wait. He stepped forward, wrapped his arms around Genevieve’s waist, and pulled her into a deep, tender kiss that erased every shadow, every tear, every mile of the dark road that had brought them to this moment.

Clara clapped her small hands, giggling loudly. “Daddy! Mommy!”

Alessandro broke the kiss, laughing as he bent down and scooped Clara up into his left arm while keeping his right arm securely wrapped around Genevieve’s waist.

They turned together toward the heavy oak doors of the church.

As the doors swung open, bright, golden afternoon sunlight flooded the sanctuary, illuminating their path down the stone steps toward the peaceful world they had built together.
