Chapter 4 - The Shadows Recede

Three days later.

The rain over Manhattan had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cold autumn sky of brilliant blue and gold.

At the private airfield in Teterboro, New Jersey, a sleek black Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its engines idling with a low, steady purr.

Alessandro stood near the boarding stairs, dressed in a dark grey suit, holding a leather diaper bag over his shoulder.

Beside him stood Mateo, holding a thick stack of travel documents and passports.

“The house in Zurich is ready, boss,” Mateo reported, his voice low. “Fully staffed, private security team cleared by European authorities, and Dr. Thorne’s former associate in Geneva has agreed to act as the primary pediatrician for the baby.”

Alessandro nodded, looking back toward the black SUV parked fifty feet away.

The rear door opened. Genevieve stepped out, wrapped in a long cream-colored cashmere coat, carrying Clara in a padded front-facing baby carrier tucked safely against her chest. She looked rested, her color back, her green eyes bright as she looked up at the clear sky.

She walked toward the plane, her steps light and easy, no longer carrying the crushing weight of a woman on the run.

“Is everything settled with the board?” Genevieve asked as she reached Alessandro.

“The Romano foundation has been completely restructured,” Alessandro replied, reaching out to gently touch the baby’s pink knit cap. “I signed the transfer papers this morning. Seventy percent of the legitimate real estate assets have been placed into an irrevocable blind trust for Clara, managed by an independent legal firm in London.”

Genevieve looked at him, surprised. “And the rest of the empire?”

“Given to Mateo and the senior capos who remained loyal,” Alessandro said, meeting her gaze squarely. “I retired three hours ago, Eve.”

Genevieve froze, her eyes wide. “You... you walked away?”

“I spent thirty-six years building a fortress because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe,” Alessandro said, taking her hand in his, his fingers interlacing with hers. “But the moment I held Clara in that hospital room, I realized that power means nothing if the people you love are living in fear of your name. I’m done, Eve. I’m just a father now. And a husband... if you’ll still have me.”

Genevieve looked at the plane, then down at their daughter sleeping peacefully against her heart, and finally at the man standing beside her—the man who had crossed through fire, broken down doors, and dismantled his own empire just to prove his love was real.

She squeezed his hand tightly.

“Zurich has good parks for strollers,” she said softly, a brilliant, warm smile spreading across her face. “Let’s go home, Alessandro.”
