Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

When Alessandro stepped back into Delivery Room 4, the silence inside felt heavy, almost holy, compared to the dark storm he had just orchestrated in the corridor.

Genevieve was lying back against the pillows, her face pale as marble, her thumb gently tracing the outline of tiny Clara’s cheek. The baby was fast asleep, wrapped tightly in her blanket, completely unaware of the empire of violence that hovered outside her door.

Alessandro walked to the side of the bed and sat down in the wooden armchair. He looked exhausted, the lines around his dark eyes deeper than they had been eight hours ago.

“Vincenzo is gone,” Alessandro said softly.

Genevieve didn't look up from her daughter. “Did you kill him?”

“No,” Alessandro replied. “He’s in federal custody. The recordings on your drive were enough to tie him to three counts of extortion, federal wire fraud, and the conspiracy to frame you.”

Genevieve’s thumb stilled on the baby’s cheek. She slowly raised her head, her pale green eyes looking at him with a mix of shock and residual terror. “You... you turned him over to the government?”

“I am a lot of things, Eve,” Alessandro said, his voice breaking slightly. “I have done things in my life that will keep me out of heaven forever. But I have never lied to you. When I swore my vows to you three years ago at St. Patrick’s, I meant every word.”

“Then why did you let him convince me?” she cried softly, tears filling her eyes once more. “The photos... the bank accounts in my name... he had documents with your signature, Alessandro! He told me you were going to use my background as an orphan to make it look like I was the mastermind behind your laundering network!”

Alessandro reached into his jacket, pulled out his personal fountain pen—a heavy silver Montblanc she had given him on their first anniversary—and set it on the bedside table.

“My signature was forged using digital seals from my office in Brooklyn,” he explained, his voice thick with emotion. “Vincenzo had access to my private safe because I trusted him like a brother. I was so blind, Eve. I was so focused on keeping the streets quiet that I didn't see the snake sitting at my own dinner table.”

He leaned forward, placing his hand gently near her hip, taking care not to touch her skin if she didn't want him to.

“When you disappeared,” Alessandro whispered, “I thought my soul had been ripped out of my chest. I didn't sleep for three weeks. I spent fifty million dollars searching every corner of North America. I almost burned this city to the ground because I thought someone had taken the only light in my life.”

Genevieve looked down at her daughter, then back at his face—at the dark circles under his eyes, the faint tremor in his hands, the utter ruin of his pride.

“I was so scared, Alessandro,” she wept quietly, her shoulders shaking. “Every time I heard a car door shut outside my apartment in Queens, I thought it was your men coming to finish me. I lived on cold soup and crackers because I was terrified to go to the grocery store. I had to give birth under a fake name because I thought if I used my real name, your enemies or your soldiers would find us first.”

Alessandro bowed his head, resting his forehead against the edge of the mattress, a single sob tearing through his chest.

“I’m sorry,” he choked out. “I’m so sorry, Eve. I brought this darkness to your life. I promised to protect you, and I built a world that made you fear me more than death.”

Genevieve reached out her trembling hand. For a long moment, her fingers hovered above his dark hair.

Then, slowly, she let them fall, resting her palm against his crown, her fingers weaving through his thick hair.

“Look at her, Alessandro,” Genevieve whispered.

Alessandro raised his head, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand.

Genevieve carefully shifted the pink-and-blue bundle toward him, tilting the baby’s face so he could see her clearly. Clara opened her tiny eyes—a brilliant, striking dark gray, exactly like her father’s.

“Hold her,” Genevieve said softly.

Alessandro’s breath caught in his throat. “I... I don't know how, Eve. I’m too big. I’ll break her.”

May you like

“You won't break her,” Genevieve said, a small, fragile smile appearing on her cracked lips for the first time in seven months. “She’s a Romano. She’s tougher than she looks.”

With trembling arms, the most feared man in New York reached out and took his daughter into his hands.
