Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Verdict

The following morning, the storm had finally passed, leaving the Chicago skyline bathed in a crisp, brilliant gold sunrise.

Claire sat on the couch in the Lakeview apartment, the quiet sound of the coffee maker filling the room. Ethan stood by the window, a sealed white envelope from Northwestern Memorial Hospital clutched in his hand. He had been holding it for an hour, terrified to open the seal.

"Open it, Ethan," Claire said from the couch. "You need to see the truth in black and white."

With trembling fingers, Ethan tore open the envelope. He pulled out the single sheet of paper, his eyes scanning past the medical jargon and the statistical probability models until he reached the final, bolded conclusion at the bottom of the page.

Paternity Probability: 99.999% Conclusion: Ethan Whitmore cannot be excluded as the biological father of the fetus.

The paper slipped from his fingers, fluttering down to the hardwood floor. Ethan dropped to his knees, his broad shoulders suddenly shaking as a year of suppressed agony, shame, and manufactured grief finally broke through his stone exterior. He buried his face in his hands, weeping openly, the sound raw and desperate in the quiet apartment.

Claire walked over, kneeling on the floor beside him. She didn't pull away this time. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling his head against her chest as he sobbed into her sweater.

"I’m sorry," he choked out, his voice broken into ragged, painful pieces. "Claire, I’m so sorry. I believed them... I let them make me hate the best thing that ever happened to me. I almost threw my son away before he was even born."

"You were drowning, Ethan," Claire whispered, her own tears finally falling into his dark hair. "Your mother built a cage out of your insecurities, and you didn't know how to see past the bars. But the cage is gone now."

He pulled back, his red, swollen eyes looking down at her belly. Slowly, with a reverence he hadn't shown in months, he placed his large palm flat against the curve of her dress.

As if on cue, a sharp, distinct kick pressed back against his hand.

Ethan let out a wet, breathless laugh, his fingers curling protectively around the bump. "He's strong."

"He's a Whitmore," Claire smiled through her tears. "The real kind."
