Chapter 2 - The Forty-Eight Hour Siege

By 8:00 p.m. that night, the Lakeview Gold Coast apartment felt like a luxury bunker. The storm outside had worsened, rain lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan.

Claire sat at the kitchen island, a cup of herbal tea cooling between her hands. Ethan stood in the doorway of the den, his tie gone, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. The black leather folder containing the divorce papers remained on the coffee table between them, untouched, like a ticking bomb whose countdown had been temporarily paused.

"The test results will take forty-eight hours," Ethan said, his voice rough. He hadn't looked her in the eye since they left the clinic.

"I know," Claire replied.

"If you lied to me, Claire..."

"I didn't lie to you, Ethan. I’ve never lied to you," she said, turning her head to look at him. "The real question you need to ask yourself is why your mother is so terrified of this baby that she would risk destroying your medical privacy to invent a betrayal."

Before Ethan could answer, the building’s intercom buzzed. A moment later, his younger brother, Grant Whitmore, walked through the door. Grant was the family's wild card—the one who refused to work for the medical group and instead ran a high-end venture capital firm downtown. He looked soaked from the rain, his expression uncharacteristically grim.

"Ethan," Grant said, ignoring Claire entirely as he stepped into the living room. "Mom is calling an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. She’s moving to invoke the morality and stability clause in the family charter."

Ethan froze. "On what grounds?"

"On the grounds that your marriage is dissolving publicly, and that a highly volatile paternity dispute is threatening the company's valuation before the pharmaceutical merger next month," Grant said, throwing a tablet onto the kitchen counter. "She’s pushing to strip your voting rights and reallocate your share distribution to the secondary trust line."

Claire looked at the screen. The secondary trust line was entirely controlled by Vivian and Grant.

"She isn't waiting for the DNA test," Claire realized aloud, a cold dread settling in her stomach. "She needs the divorce signed or the voting rights stripped before the test results come back. Because once the test proves the baby is Ethan’s, he remains the primary heir to the entire Whitmore legacy, and his voting block stays intact."

Grant looked at Claire, his eyes widening slightly as if he hadn't expected the "scholarship girl" to calculate the financial math so quickly.

Ethan let out a low, humorless breath, the pieces of the puzzle finally locking into place. His mother hadn't just tried to protect him from a cheating wife. She had engineered a coup using his deepest, most painful insecurity as the weapon.

"Grant," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register that made his younger brother step back. "Whose side are you on?"

Grant hesitated, looking between the tablet and his brother. "Dom, I just want the company stable. Mom said—"

"Mom lied," Ethan said, walking over to the coffee table. He picked up the leather folder, walked to the kitchen, and dropped it directly into the trash can. "Tell her I’ll be at the board meeting. And I won't be alone."
