Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The executive boardroom of the Whitmore Medical Group on Michigan Avenue was a cathedral of dark oak, leather, and predatory intent. At 7:00 a.m. sharp, twelve senior board members sat in silence as Vivian Whitmore took her place at the head of the table.

Beside her stood Dr. Malcolm Avery, looking pale but resolute, clutching a medical file to his chest.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Vivian said, her voice commanding the room with absolute ease. "As you know, my son Ethan has been facing a deeply unfortunate personal crisis. To protect the integrity of the Whitmore name and ensure our impending merger goes through smoothly, we must temporarily reallocate executive authority—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Ethan walked in, his expression carved from granite, wearing a pristine slate-gray suit. But it wasn't his presence that made the board members gasp. It was the woman walking beside him.

Claire wore a tailored emerald dress that clearly accentuated her six-month pregnancy. She held her head high, carrying a portable hard drive in her hand.

"Ethan," Vivian said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, warning chill. "This is a private corporate meeting. Your... guest has no standing here."

"My wife has twenty-five percent proxy standing as my designated legal partner until a court says otherwise, Mother," Ethan said, taking a seat at the table. Claire sat right beside him, plugging the hard drive into the central media console.

"This is absurd!" Dr. Avery stammered. "Mr. Whitmore, your marital issues are—"

"Let's talk about medical issues instead, Dr. Avery," Claire interrupted, tapping the console screen. The massive projector behind Vivian flashed to life, displaying a highly complex database log. "This is the server audit trail from Whitmore Diagnostics from three months ago. As a former clinical quality director, I still have legal access to public verification requests regarding standard laboratory compliance."

Claire highlighted a specific line of code. "On the day Ethan's fertility sample was processed, Dr. Avery, you didn't run the panel under Ethan's name. You processed a sample belonging to a patient named Thomas Miller—a man undergoing radiation therapy that had completely devastated his count. You then manually changed the name on the digital printout to Ethan Whitmore."

A collective murmur erupted across the boardroom. Several senior doctors on the board leaned forward, their faces tightening.

"That's a lie!" Dr. Avery shouted, his face turning an ugly, mottled purple. "That's proprietary data! You hacked our system!"

"I didn't hack anything," Claire said smoothly. "I submitted a formal quality variance report to the state medical board last night. They pulled the server logs two hours ago. The chain of custody shows the order to alter the document came directly from an encrypted email address registered to... Vivian Whitmore."

The room went deathly silent. Every eye turned toward the matriarch at the head of the table.
