Chapter 5 - The Winter Garden

Three weeks later. mid-February.
The storm of scandal that had rocked Wall Street had finally begun to settle. The news of Harrison Mercer’s arrest and the corporate restructuring of Mercer Holdings had dominated headlines for days. Sienna Blake had fled to Europe after her text messages were leaked to the press, and Harrison sat in a federal holding facility in upstate New York, awaiting trial with no bail.
Mercer Holdings had been renamed Parker & Donovan Real Estate, with Eleanor taking over as CEO and Clare serving as the head of the charitable housing foundation created in William Mercer's honor.
Clare sat in the warm, sunlit sunroom of a breathtaking historic estate in Rhinebeck, New York—the very estate William Mercer had built decades ago. The Hudson River sparkled beneath a blanket of fresh snow outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.
At thirty-seven weeks pregnant, Clare looked radiant. The weight of betrayal and fear had completely lifted from her shoulders, replaced by a deep, peaceful grace.
Sitting across from her was Caleb Vance.
Caleb was thirty-eight, a brilliant architect and green-energy developer, and the younger brother of her attorney, Julian Vance. Caleb had been hired six months earlier by William’s trust to restore the historic Rhinebeck estate, and over the past month, he had become Clare’s steadfast protector and closest companion.
Unlike Harrison, who was obsessed with power, status, and control, Caleb was quiet, deeply kind, and possessed an easy, warm humor that made Clare feel safe.
"You're working too hard," Caleb said gently, walking over with a tray containing warm herbal tea and fresh scones. "The doctor said you need to keep your feet up this week."
Clare smiled, taking the cup. "I'm just reviewing the nursery designs you drew for the west wing. Caleb... they're beautiful. The wooden crib carved from the fallen oak tree on the estate is the most thoughtful gift anyone has ever given me."
Caleb sat beside her on the bench, his warm brown eyes filled with sincere tenderness. "Your son deserves to grow up in a place built with love, Clare. Not built on greed."
Clare looked at him, feeling a soft flutter in her chest that she hadn't felt in a decade. "Why are you doing all of this for us, Caleb? You didn't have to stay in Rhinebeck after the restoration was finished."
Caleb reached out, gently placing his large, warm hand near hers, giving her space to pull away if she wanted.
"Because the first day I saw you walk into my brother’s office, carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, I saw the strongest woman I’ve ever met," Caleb said softly. "I don't want to rush you, Clare. You've been through hell. But I want to be here. For you. And for him."
Clare looked down at their hands, a soft tear slipping down her cheek—not a tear of sorrow, but of profound relief.
"Thank you, Caleb," she whispered, leaning her head gently against his shoulder. "For showing me what a real man looks like."
Suddenly, a sharp, familiar contraction rippled across Clare’s abdomen.
She gasped, clutching Caleb’s forearm.
Caleb immediately stood up, his face filled with alert concern. "Clare? Is it time?"
May you like
Clare looked up at him, a breathless, joyous laugh escaping her lips as her water broke.
"Caleb," Clare gasped, holding her belly. "Your godson decided he doesn't want to wait until next week!"
