Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

By the second week of January, the tension in Manhattan’s financial district was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Mercer Holdings was three days away from its historic ten-billion-dollar Initial Public Offering on the New York Stock Exchange. Harrison Mercer appeared on the cover of Forbes and Bloomberg, hailed as the undisputed titan of New York real estate.
Yet behind the polished image, Harrison was living in a nightmare.
Clare had completely vanished off the grid. His private investigators had searched every hotel in New York, Miami, and Paris, but found nothing. Even worse, subtle legal inquiries had begun popping up around the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the ownership structure of Mercer Holdings’ flagship properties.
Harrison sat in the glass-walled boardroom on the seventieth floor of Mercer Tower, surrounded by his board of directors and lead underwriters.
"Gentlemen, the IPO is fully oversubscribed," Harrison announced, standing at the head of the table, attempting to exude absolute confidence. "By Friday morning, Mercer Holdings will be the largest publicly traded real estate firm on the East Coast."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
The room fell dead silent.
Walking into the boardroom was Clare Donovan Mercer.
She wore a breathtaking, tailored navy blue silk maternity suit that highlighted her thirty-four-week bump. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek, elegant bun. She radiated power, calm, and utter authority.
Beside her walked Julian Vance—New York’s most feared corporate litigation attorney—and Eleanor Parker.
Harrison’s pencil snapped in his hand. He gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white.
"Clare?" Harrison choked out, his voice cracking. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private board meeting!"
"I know, Harrison," Clare said calmly, her voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. "That's why I'm here. As a major shareholder representative, I have every right to attend."
The board members looked at each other in confusion. "Harrison, who is this woman with Mrs. Mercer?" asked Arthur Vance, the senior board chairman.
Clare stepped forward, placing a thick stack of bound legal documents in front of every single board member.
"Gentlemen," Clare announced, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. "The woman standing beside me is Eleanor Parker Mercer. She is the biological daughter of William Mercer, and the lawful owner of fifty percent of Mercer Holdings."
A collective gasp rippled through the boardroom.
"She's lying!" Harrison screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Clare. "Eleanor Parker died ten years ago! This is an extortion attempt! Security!"
"Security won't save you, Harrison," Attorney Julian Vance said coldly, stepping forward. "We have submitted forensic DNA testing confirming Eleanor’s parentage. More importantly, we have submitted William Mercer’s original handwritten ledger and the encrypted digital files from Project Obsidian to the SEC and the Southern District of New York."
Harrison dropped into his chair, his face turned the color of chalk.
"Project Obsidian?" Chairman Arthur Vance asked, opening his folder. His eyes widened in horror as he read the financial records. "Harrison... you forged death certificates? You siphoned two hundred million dollars into Cayman Island shell accounts?"
"It's a mistake! She stole those files!" Harrison stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Clare is mentally unstable! She's pregnant and upset because we're separated!"
Clare walked straight up to the head of the table, standing directly over her husband.
She reached into her purse and pulled out a clean, signed copy of divorce papers.
"I am completely sane, Harrison," Clare said softly, every word laced with lethal precision. "And I am divorcing you. Under New York law, as your wife, I am claiming my twenty-five percent marital share of your remaining personal assets. Combined with Eleanor’s fifty percent, we now hold a controlling seventy-five percent stake in Mercer Holdings."
She looked around the room at the stunned board members.
"Effective immediately," Clare declared, "by vote of the majority shareholders, Harrison Mercer is terminated as Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Holdings."
Harrison stared at her, his eyes wide with horror, his breathing shallow and rapid. "Clare... please... we can talk about this... think about our son..."
"I am thinking about my son," Clare whispered, leaning down so only he could hear her. "He will grow up knowing his mother brought down a monster."
Two federal agents in dark suits walked into the boardroom.
May you like
"Harrison Mercer?" one agent asked. "You are under arrest for securities fraud, grand larceny, and document forgery. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked around Harrison’s wrists in front of his entire board of directors, Clare walked out of the room, her head held high, leaving the ruins of his empire behind her.
