Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

Friday morning. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Reporters sat shoulder-to-shoulder in the gallery. The air was thick with anticipation.
Nathan Carter sat at his table, wearing a smug, victorious grin. He adjusted his silk tie, leaning over to whisper to his mother. Vivian looked radiant, wearing a pearl necklace and a patronizing smile. They believed today was the day Amelia’s life would be ruined.
Judge Vance took her seat, her expression exceptionally grave.
"We are here to resolve the emergency motion filed by the plaintiff to dismiss the defendant’s physical evidence," Judge Vance began. "Mr. Vance, you may present your argument."
Marcus Vance stood up, puffing his chest. "Your Honor, in light of the shocking events of Wednesday night—where Dr. Amelia Carter was caught in a drug-ridden alleyway, administering narcotics to her brother, a known addict—it is clear that Dr. Carter is not only emotionally unstable but is actively involved in criminal activity. Her professional credibility is entirely compromised. We cannot trust any 'forensic evidence' presented by a woman who is facing imminent criminal charges for drug distribution. We ask that her evidence be thrown out, and her medical license be suspended pending a full investigation."
"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Judge Vance said. She turned her eyes to the defense. "Ms. Jenkins, your response?"
Sarah Jenkins stood up, but she did not walk to the podium alone. Amelia stood beside her, holding a sleek, silver external hard drive.
"Your Honor," Sarah said, her voice echoing with a power that made Nathan’s smile falter slightly. "We do not object to a full investigation. In fact, we welcome it. Because we have brought the results of that investigation with us today."
Marcus Vance scoffed. "Your Honor, this is more stalling—"
"Quiet, Mr. Vance," Judge Vance snapped. "Ms. Jenkins, proceed."
Amelia stepped forward, plugging the hard drive into the court's media system. The large screens on the wall flickered to life.
"Let us talk about Wednesday night," Amelia said, her voice calm, cold, and utterly commanding. "The plaintiff claims I was caught administering illegal drugs. Let us look at the forensic facts of that night."
She projected the video of the alleyway, but this time, it was not the grainy, edited version leaked to the press. It was a crystal-clear, high-definition recording with a synchronized audio track and an overlay of spectral data.
"This is the unedited, raw recording captured by my personal, secure body-worn forensic recorder," Amelia explained.
The video played. The gallery gasped as they heard Chloe’s voice clearly: "We didn't do anything. Leo had a relapse... And you, being the loving sister, used your medical access to supply him... Nathan sends his regards."
Nathan’s face turned from smug to a sickly, pale green. He half-stood from his chair, but Marcus Vance grabbed his arm, pulling him back down.
"This is a fabrication!" Nathan yelled, his voice cracking. "That’s not her voice! That’s AI!"
"The recording is secured with an SHA-256 cryptographic hash, verified by the State Forensic Institute’s digital forensics unit," Amelia countered immediately, her voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. "The digital signature proves it was recorded in real-time and has not been altered by so much as a single pixel."
She clicked to the next slide, showing the chemical analysis.
"Furthermore, the drug used to poison my brother, Leo, was Lot #882-X—a proprietary pharmaceutical compound manufactured by Apex Bio-Pharma. Here is the shipping manifest, signed by Chloe Reynolds on Tuesday. And here..."
Amelia zoomed in on the second man in the video, showing a crystal-clear facial recognition comparison.
"...is Robert Vance, the nephew of my husband's attorney, who was hired by Carter Holdings under 'special consulting fees' paid directly from Nathan Carter's personal account three days ago."
The courtroom erupted into chaos. Reporters were shouting, typing furiously on their phones.
Judge Vance slammed her gavel repeatedly. "Order! Order in this court!"
Vivian Carter stood up, her face twisted in rage. "This is a lie! She’s framing us! She’s a manipulative, worthless—"
"Sit down, Mrs. Carter!" Judge Vance roared, her face red with anger. She looked down at Nathan and Marcus Vance with absolute disgust. "Mr. Vance, do you have any explanation for why your nephew is caught on high-definition video admitting to a conspiracy to frame and poison a witness in this case?"
Marcus Vance was speechless. He looked at the evidence, then at Nathan, and slowly took a step away from his own client, realizing his own career was burning to the ground.
"Your Honor," Sarah Jenkins said, stepping forward. "We are not just asking for the dismissal of the plaintiff's motion. We are presenting a counter-claim. We are filing for immediate divorce on the grounds of extreme physical cruelty, corporate fraud, and criminal conspiracy. And we are submitting this entire file to the District Attorney's office, who, as we speak, have issued arrest warrants for Nathan Carter, Vivian Carter, and Chloe Reynolds."
As if on cue, the heavy double doors of the courtroom burst open. Four armed police officers and two state investigators entered, walking directly toward the plaintiff's table.
Nathan looked around wildly, his perfect world collapsing in a matter of seconds. "No! You can't do this! Do you know who I am? Amelia, tell them! Tell them you made it up!"
Amelia stood perfectly still, watching him. She did not look at him with anger, or hatred, or even satisfaction. She looked at him with the cold, clinical detachment of a pathologist examining a specimen.

"The evidence doesn't lie, Nathan," Amelia said softly. "And neither do I."
As the handcuffs clicked around Nathan’s wrists, and Vivian was led away in tears, the gallery erupting into a frenzy of camera flashes, Amelia finally let out a long, slow breath. The nightmare was over.
