Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The shockwave of Amelia's presentation reverberated through the legal teams like an earthquake. Marcus Vance immediately demanded a twenty-four-hour recess, claiming he needed time to review the newly introduced physical evidence. Judge Vance granted it, but her expression was grim. She looked at Nathan Carter not as a respected businessman, but as a potential criminal defendant.

As they exited the courtroom, the hallway was a feeding frenzy. Word of Dr. Amelia Carter’s dramatic forensic self-revelation had already leaked to the press. Flashbulbs blinded them as they emerged.

"Amelia! Is it true your husband abused you?" "Dr. Carter, did you fake the evidence?" "Nathan, do you have a comment on the DNA matches?"

Nathan ignored the reporters, his face a mask of cold fury as he practically dragged his mother toward their waiting black SUV. Amelia walked past them, flanked by her lawyer, Sarah. She didn't look back. She didn't need to. The first crack in Nathan’s perfect facade had been delivered, and it was deep.

Inside the secure offices of Jenkins & Associates, Sarah poured two cups of tea. Her hands were shaking slightly, but her face was alight with professional triumph.

"Amelia, that was the most brilliant, terrifying piece of litigation strategy I have ever witnessed," Sarah breathed, sitting down. "You didn't just defend yourself; you completely dismantled their entire narrative in under ten minutes. But you know Nathan won't stop here. He’s a cornered beast now. He has too much to lose—his reputation, his real estate empire, his social standing."

"I know," Amelia said, taking a sip of her tea. Her hands, unlike Sarah’s, were perfectly steady. "Nathan’s entire identity is built on control. He spent seven years convincing me, my friends, and my remaining family that I was losing my mind. He made me doubt my own memory. But when I realized what he was doing, I went back to my roots. I stopped reacting as a victim, and I started observing as a scientist. When you observe a predator, you learn their patterns."

"What’s his next move?" Sarah asked.

"He will try to destroy my professional credibility," Amelia analyzed calmly. "If he can prove that I, as a forensic specialist, fabricated or manipulated the data, then the evidence becomes inadmissible. He will go after my past. He will go after my career."

Amelia was right.

At that very moment, in the penthouse office of Carter Holdings, Nathan was pacing the room like a caged tiger. Vivian sat on the plush leather sofa, her face tight with rage.

"How did you let this happen, Nathan?" she hissed, her voice sharp as glass. "You assured me she was under control. You assured me she was isolated, broken, and ready to sign the settlement! Now she has the press calling us monsters! Do you have any idea what this is doing to our family name? To the board of directors?"

"Shut up, Mother!" Nathan roared, slamming his fist onto his mahogany desk. A crystal decanter rattled. "I didn't know she was documenting it! She was always so quiet! She just took it! I thought she was paralyzed by it!"

"She wasn't paralyzed," Marcus Vance said, entering the office and shutting the heavy double doors behind him. His face was grim. "She was hunting you, Nathan. And right now, she has you in her sights. That forensic data is pristine. I had our independent medical consultants look at the files she uploaded to the court database. It’s ironclad. If those images and DNA profiles are admitted as formal evidence, you aren't just looking at a bad divorce settlement. You’re looking at felony assault charges."

Nathan’s chest heaved. "Then we discredit her. There has to be a way. She was a forensic pathologist for the city for ten years. She must have made mistakes. She must have a grievance, a dark secret, something we can use to show she is malicious and biased."

"We are already looking into her past cases," Vance replied. "But we need something more immediate. We need to shift the public narrative. If the public believes she is a manipulative, vindictive woman who used her professional skills to frame her husband, we can pressure the judge. We need to find a weak link."

Vivian stood up, a cold, calculating smile returning to her lips. "I know exactly who the weak link is. Amelia’s younger brother, Leo."

Nathan looked at his mother, his eyes narrowing. "Leo? He’s a recovering addict. He’s been clean for three years."

"Yes, clean because Amelia paid for his rehab and set up a trust fund for him," Vivian said, her voice dripping with venom. "But a man with a history of addiction is always one bad day away from a relapse. Or, at least, the appearance of one. If we can link Amelia to illegal drug transactions or show she was using her medical credentials to obtain prescription narcotics for her brother, her medical license is gone. And with it, her credibility as an expert witness."

Nathan’s face slowly broke into a sinister, dark grin. "Mother, you are a genius. Let’s get to work."
