Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Dawn

The autumn chill had given way to the crisp, bright morning of November.
Back at the estate, the sun streamed through the massive glass windows of the solarium, illuminating a scene that seven years ago I would have sworn was impossible.
Lily and Emma sat side by side at a small easel, painting matching pictures of a blue-eyed puppy with floppy ears. They wore identical pink sweaters—a gift I had picked out myself—and their laughter echoed off the marble floors, filling every empty corner of the mansion with life.
I stood in the doorway, a cup of black coffee in my hand, watching them.
My empire was secure. The traitors were locked away, the threats were neutralized, and the shadows of the past had finally been dragged into the light. But looking at the two little girls, I realized that power wasn't measured by the territory you controlled or the fear you inspired.
Power was the ability to protect what you loved.
Emma turned her head, catching me standing in the doorway. She didn't shrink back or look away. She smiled—a bright, wide, unburdened smile that mirrored the woman I had lost, and gave me back the future I thought was stolen.
“Daddy!” Emma called out, waving her paintbrush in the air. “Look! We painted you!”
I walked across the room, kneeling beside their easel. Painted on the canvas was a stick-figure family of three—tall father, two smiling girls holding hands, and a very poorly drawn puppy at their feet.
“It’s a masterpiece,” I said, kissing the top of both their heads.

Lily leaned against my shoulder, and Emma leaned against my other side, their warm weight grounding me entirely.
The story of the Blackwell family had started in tragedy, broken by betrayal, and forged in the fires of vengeance. But looking out at the sunlit gardens, I knew the rest of the pages were ours to write. And for the first time in my life, I wasn't afraid of what came next.
