Chapter 1 - The Face in the Mirror

The October wind bit into the damp grass of Lincoln Park, but the cold was nothing compared to the shock wave freezing my blood. Lily stood right beside the weathered bench, her small hand comfortably linking with the stranger's—a girl who was, beyond all logic or statistical possibility, her mirror image.

I was Marcus Blackwell. To the underworld of Chicago, my name was synonymous with ruthless efficiency and absolute control. I owned docks, shipping lanes, and half the financial district. But standing there in the fading autumn sunlight, my empire felt like dust.

Grace was dead. I had buried her myself seven years ago after a devastating hit-and-run that the police department conveniently closed as a tragic accident. I had grieved, hardened my heart, and poured every ounce of my broken soul into raising Lily, the only piece of Grace I had left. Or so I thought.

"What was your mother’s name?" I asked again, my voice low and heavy with restrained panic.

Emma’s green eyes, so painfully reminiscent of the woman I had loved and lost, looked up into mine. “Her name was Claire,” she whispered.

My breath caught. Claire. Not Grace.

Clare. Grace’s identical twin sister, whom the family had disowned and declared dead to society a decade before the crash. They had been estranged, living entirely separate lives in different states, yet here was the proof that the bloodline had splintered and survived in secret.

“Daddy, can we take her home? Please?” Lily begged, tugging at my tailored wool coat. “She’s freezing.”

I looked down at Emma. Her coat was paper-thin, her sneakers held together by gray tape. Abandoned in a public park since sunrise by an abusive, heartless aunt. The rage that began to simmer in my chest wasn't the cold fury of a syndicate boss; it was the raw, primal wrath of a father discovering his flesh and blood had been discarded.

“Stand up, Emma,” I said, extending a hand. She hesitated, her small, dirt-smudged fingers sliding into my palm. Her grip was tight, desperate, as if she feared letting go would make us vanish.

I looked back at my lead bodyguard, Victor, whose eyes were wide with shock. “Bring the car around. Now. And have our private medical team prepped at the estate before we arrive.”

“Yes, Mr. Blackwell,” Victor barked into his lapel microphone, his usual stoic demeanor entirely shattered.

As we walked toward the idling black Maybach, I pulled off my expensive cashmere scarf and wrapped it around Emma’s shivering shoulders. She buried her face in the soft fabric, inhaling the scent of sandalwood and smoke.

“You’re safe now, Emma,” I murmured, lifting her into the back seat while Lily scrambled in beside her, chattering happily about the massive dollhouse waiting in her bedroom. “No one will ever leave you behind again.”
