Chapter 4 - The Hidden Sisterhood

Over the next month, the grand estate transformed. The echoing, lonely halls were filled with the sound of running footsteps, giggles, and arguments over board games. Emma’s hollow cheeks filled out, her cough disappeared under Dr. Evans’ care, and the permanent look of terror in her green eyes was replaced by the bright, defiant spark of a Blackwell.

Watching Lily and Emma together was like looking through a kaleidoscope of my past. They dressed alike, spoke in tandem, and shared a secret language of giggles that drove my housekeepers half-mad with affectionate exasperation.

One Saturday morning, I found them sitting on the floor of my massive walk-in closet, rummaging through old boxes of photographs.

“Daddy look!” Emma called out, holding up a faded polaroid. “Is this me?”

I walked over, kneeling beside them. I took the photograph from her small fingers. It showed Claire, smiling brightly in a garden, holding a bouquet of wildflowers.

“No, sweetheart,” I said softly, a lump forming in my throat. “That’s your mother, Claire. Grace’s twin.”

Emma stared at the picture, tracing the edge with her thumb. “She looked just like Aunt Grace, didn’t she?”

“They were identical,” I said, looking back through the boxes.

Suddenly, Lily pulled out a small, leather-bound diary with a rusted brass lock. “Look what I found! It has a key taped to the back!”

I took the diary from Lily’s hands. It was Claire’s journal, dated from the exact year she and Grace had parted ways. My hands shook as I used the small brass key to pop open the rusted lock. The pages were yellowed, filled with hurried, emotional handwriting.

I flipped to the final entry, dated just weeks before the car accident that supposedly killed Grace.

‘Marcus thinks he’s safe, but they are closing in on the family. To protect the girls, we have to split them up. One stays with him in the light; the one with me goes into the shadows. If anything happens to me, find the safe deposit box at the Union Bank downtown. The truth about the crash isn't what he thinks. It wasn't an accident.’

My heart stopped.

It wasn't an accident.

For seven years, I had believed Grace was killed by a drunk driver. For seven years, I had hunted down petty street criminals, convinced it was a random act of violence. But this entry—written by Claire, who had lived in hiding precisely because she knew the depth of my enemies—changed everything.

“Daddy?” Emma asked, looking up at me with those familiar green eyes. “Are you okay?”

I forced a smile, folding the diary closed and pressing it against my chest. “I’m fine, sweetie. Just... remembering some old friends.”

I stood up, my mind racing. The Syndicate had enemies, yes. But my personal enemies—the men who had tried to destabilize my empire a decade ago—had known about Grace. They had known about my soft spots.

If Grace’s death was an assassination disguised as an accident, then the war I thought had ended seven years ago was only waiting for me to find the other half of my family.
