Chapter 5 - The Crucible on the Eastside

The rain poured down in blinding, iron-colored sheets over the abandoned Industrial District of Eastside City.

The old Moretti Meatpacking Plant—a colossal rust-bucket of corrugated steel, shattered glass, and rotting brickwork—loomed against the night sky like a decaying leviathan.

Inside the subterranean basement vault known as Room 14, a single bare lightbulb hung from a rusted wire, swaying gently in the cold draft.

Leo Moretti sat chained to a concrete pillar in the center of the room.

His face was covered in dark bruises, his clothes tattered, his frame dangerously thin after four months of starvation and captivity. Yet, despite his broken ribs and bloody hands, his eyes remained defiant—the sharp, piercing blue eyes of the Moretti bloodline.

Standing ten feet away was Don Dante Alighieri.

Dante was a man in his late fifties, impeccably groomed in a gray pinstripe suit that looked grotesquely out of place amid the blood-stained concrete walls. He held an ivory-handled cane in one hand and a gold pocket watch in the other.

"Your time is up, Leo," Dante said smoothly, checking his watch. "Your sweet Elena has undoubtedly bled out in a ditch by now. And your bastard child is likely in the hands of my associates at Pine Valley."

Leo spit blood onto the concrete floor, grinning through cracked lips. "You don't know my brother, Dante. If my son was at Pine Valley... Sebastian already has him."

Dante’s smile flickered, a twitch of irritation passing over his thin lips. "Sebastian is a businessman playing at being a warlord. He thinks because he controls a few docks and pays off a few senators that he owns this city. He doesn't have the stomach for real war."

BOOM.

The heavy steel blast doors at the top of the concrete stairs exploded inward with a deafening roar.

Dust, concrete debris, and shockwaves blasted through the corridor. Before the echo of the explosion could fade, automatic gunfire erupted from the upper levels—sharp, disciplined, three-round bursts.

Dante’s four armed guards instantly drew their weapons, taking positions behind the concrete pillars. "He's here!" one shouted into his radio. "Sector One is breached! He brought heavy armor—"

The guard's sentence was cut short by a single high-calibrated sniper round that shattered the concrete pillar behind him, dropping him instantly.

Through the cloud of gray smoke and dust, a single figure strode down the stairwell.

Sebastian Moretti walked into Room 14.

He wore no heavy tactical armor, no helmet. Just a black Kevlar vest over his dark shirt, a heavy shotgun slung across his shoulder, and a pistol in his right hand. His face was smeared with ash and rain, his dark eyes fixed entirely on his brother chained to the pillar.

"You're late," Leo rasped, a weak, blood-stained grin spreading across his face.

"Traffic was terrible," Sebastian replied calmly, racking the shotgun slide with a crisp, terrifying clack-clack.

"Kill him!" Dante screamed, ducking behind his remaining bodyguards.

The room erupted into violence.

Sebastian moved with terrifying, lethal fluid efficiency. He didn't cover; he advanced. Every step was calculated, every shot deliberate. He fired two heavy slugs into the chest of the nearest guard, sending the man flying backward through a wooden partition.

A second guard fired a volley of automatic rounds that grazed Sebastian's left arm, tearing through his sleeve and leaving a bright streak of blood. Sebastian didn't even flinch. He closed the distance in two broad strides, grabbing the guard’s weapon by the barrel, twisting it until the man's wrist snapped, and driving a brutal elbow into his sternum.

Within forty-five seconds, the room fell deathly silent again, save for the swaying lightbulb and the heavy breathing of three men.

Dante stood cornered against the back wall, his ivory cane dropped on the floor, his hands trembling as he pointed a small snub-nosed revolver at Leo’s head.

"Step back, Sebastian!" Dante shrieked, his polished composure completely shattered. "Step back or I put a bullet through his brain right now! You lost! I have the city council! I have the police! You have nothing!"

Sebastian stopped five feet away. He lowered his shotgun, letting it hang loosely by his side.

"You took my brother, Dante," Sebastian said softly, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy tone that made grown men tremble. "You hunted his pregnant wife. You tried to murder a four-pound child sleeping in an incubator."

"He’s a Moretti!" Dante yelled, panic straining his voice. "He was a threat to my family!"

"He was a baby," Sebastian corrected coldly.

Slowly, Sebastian reached up with his left hand, pulling back his blood-stained sleeve.

There, beneath the heavy gold Rolex, was the pink plastic hospital bracelet from seventeen years ago.

"Seventeen years ago, I swore on this band that no one would ever touch my family again," Sebastian said, taking one slow step forward. "You thought I built an empire to fight you, Dante. I built it so I would never have to mercy anyone who touched my blood."

Dante’s finger tightened on the trigger. "Die, you bastard—"

BANG.

A shot rang out—not from Dante’s gun, nor from Sebastian’s.

Dante froze, his eyes widening in shock as he looked down at his own chest. A red stain was spreading rapidly across his pristine silk tie.

Behind him, Detective Marcus Vance stepped out from the shadows of the utility corridor, holding his service weapon with both hands.

"That’s for violating federal witness protection, Dante," Vance said quietly, lowering his weapon as Dante collapsed onto the concrete floor, motionless.

Sebastian didn't waste a second. He rushed forward, pulling a heavy set of bolt cutters from his tactical belt and snapping the thick steel chains wrapping around Leo’s chest.

Leo fell forward into his brother's arms.

Sebastian caught him, pulling his broken, exhausted brother tightly against his chest, holding the back of Leo's head just as he had done seventeen years ago in Room 14 of Pine Valley Hospital.

"I got you, Leo," Sebastian whispered, his voice cracking with emotion as tears finally tracked through the ash on his face. "I got you. I didn't break the promise."

May you like

Leo clutched Sebastian’s blood-stained shirt, breathing in the cold air. "Is he... is my son...?"

"He's safe," Sebastian smiled, wiping his eyes. "He's home."
