Chapter 4 - The Survivor’s Secret

The heavy iron security doors of the medical bay flew open as Sebastian’s guards brought the woman inside on a stretcher.

Elena looked barely conscious. Her clothes were torn, mud-splattered, and stained with dried blood. A deep cut ran across her forehead, and her wrists bore dark, purple rope burns. But despite her agonizing physical state, her dark eyes were wide with wild, desperate instinct.

"Where is he?" she gasped, her voice a ragged, breathless scream as she tried to fight off the nurses attempting to stabilize her IV line. "Where is my baby?! Sebastian—where is my son?!"

"Elena! Stop moving!" Sebastian commanded, his voice filling the room with absolute authority as he caught her shoulders, pinning her gently to the gurney. "He’s here! He’s safe! Look at me—he is alive!"

Elena froze, her bloodshot eyes locking onto Sebastian’s face. "You... you got him? The fire station... he was taken to Pine Valley..."

"He’s right here," I said softly, stepping aside so she could see the incubator two feet away.

Elena let out a sob—a sound so raw, so filled with months of unimaginable pain and terror, that it tore through the room. She reached out her bruised, trembling hands toward the glass.

I quickly unlatched the access doors of the incubator, gently guiding her fingers inside so she could touch her baby's tiny leg.

"Leo..." she wept, her tears falling fast onto the white sheet. "Oh God, my baby... my sweet baby..."

Dr. Julian immediately stepped in, administering a mild sedative into her IV line to prevent her from going into traumatic shock. "Her blood pressure is dangerously high," he warned Sebastian. "She has severe lacerations, dehydration, and signs of prolonged physical restraint. She needs immediate surgical cleaning and blood transfusions."

"Do whatever it takes," Sebastian ordered, his voice dangerously low. He stood over her gurney, his face dark with a storm of rage. "Elena... where is my brother?"

Elena gripped Sebastian’s sleeve, her knuckles turning white. "He... he sacrificed everything for us, Sebastian," she whispered, her lungs gasping for air. "Dante... Dante didn't kill him four months ago. He kept him alive in the catacombs beneath the old slaughterhouse on the Eastside. He wanted the ledger key."

Sebastian went deathly still. "Leo is alive?"

"He was... three hours ago," Elena wept, her chest heaving. "He helped me escape. He pulled the iron bars from the rotting brickwork... he fought off two guards with his bare hands so I could reach the baby... he told me to find you..."

She clutched a small, blood-soaked piece of paper into Sebastian’s palm.

"He said... tell Sebastian... room fourteen..." she whispered, her head falling back as the sedative finally took hold, plunging her into unconsciousness.

Sebastian stood frozen in the center of the room, looking down at the crumpled note in his hand.

I stepped closer to him, looking at the bloody paper. Written in jagged, frantic strokes was a single line of text:

“The flame still burns where we first held the light. Don't come alone.”

"Room fourteen," I murmured, reading the words. "That was the NICU room where you held Leo seventeen years ago."

"No," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a register that chilled the blood in my veins. "Room fourteen was what we called the basement vault beneath my father's old headquarters on the Eastside slaughterhouse district. The place where my father used to lock us when we failed."

He turned to look at Little Leo sleeping peacefully in his incubator, then at Elena resting under the surgical lights, and finally at me.

"Dante isn't just trying to destroy my family," Sebastian said, his eyes burning with a terrifying, ancient fire. "He’s trying to recreate my childhood nightmare. He wants to kill my brother in the same dark room where our father tried to break us."

"Sebastian, you can't just charge into a trap," I pleaded, stepping in front of him as he reached for his tactical jacket hanging on the wall. "That's what Dante wants! He knows you'll come for Leo!"

"Of course it's a trap," Sebastian said, checking the magazine of his custom heavy pistol with a sharp, metallic click. "Dante spent twenty years learning how I think. But he forgot one thing."

He stepped up to me, leaning down until his eyes were inches from mine.

"He thinks I’m fighting to protect an empire," Sebastian whispered. "He doesn't realize I’m fighting to protect a home. Watch over my nephew, Clara. If I don't come back by sunrise... take the silver USB drive to the Federal Courthouse in Manhattan."

"Sebastian—"

"Promise me, Clara!" he demanded, his hand gripping my shoulder with desperate strength. "Promise me you will protect Leo’s son!"

I looked at the fierce, unbroken man standing before me—a man who had spent his entire life wearing the monster's mask just to shield the people he loved from the true evil of the world.

"I promise," I said clearly. "Now go bring your brother home."
