Chapter 2 - Shadows over Pod B

"You are out of your mind!" I snapped, my voice rising above the hum of the monitors despite my training. "This is a medical facility, Mr. Moretti! You can't just walk out with a critically ill neonate because of some underworld rivalry!"
Sebastian handed the baby to me with gentle precision, ensuring the tiny blanket stayed wrapped snugly around his chest. The moment the baby left Sebastian's warm skin, his oxygen saturation monitor chimed a low warning beep. The child began to squirm, a tiny, raspy whimper escaping his lips.
"Look at his monitor," I urged, pointing to the glowing green screen above Bed Nine. "His heart rate is spiking. His oxygen is dipping. He needs medical care, not a getaway car!"
Sebastian stared at the monitor, his expression unreadable. He reached out one finger and brushed it against the baby’s cheek. Instantly, the baby quieted down, his little hand reaching up to grasp Sebastian's knuckle once more. As if by magic, the chiming on the monitor slowed, returning to a steady, rhythmic green number.
"He trusts me," Sebastian said quietly. "And right now, Nurse Clara, that trust is the only thing keeping him alive."
The tall bodyguard stepped closer to Sebastian, leaning in. "Mr. Moretti, we have three minutes before Detective Vance’s unit arrives. If the cops lock down this hospital, the child goes into state custody under an alias. And once he’s in the system, Don Dante’s men will trace the filing within an hour."
"Don Dante?" I repeated, the name striking a cold chord of terror. Dante Alighieri—not the poet, but the brutal capo of the rival Northside syndicate—was a name whispered in terror even in public institutions. "What does Dante want with an abandoned baby?"
Sebastian looked directly into my eyes, his gaze penetrating and relentless. "The woman who left this baby at the fire station wasn't a random addict, Clara. Her name was Elena. She was Leo's fiancé."
The room went completely still.
"Leo's... fiancé?" I breathed.
"They were hiding her," Sebastian said, his voice dripping with suppressed fury. "Dante kidnapped my brother four months ago to force him to sign over our family's legitimate shipping terminals. When Leo refused, Dante thought he had eliminated the entire Moretti bloodline. He didn't know Elena was pregnant with my brother's child. This baby... this four-pound miracle... is Leo's son. He is my nephew. The last living piece of my brother."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I looked down at the tiny, fragile creature in my arms. Baby Boy Miller wasn't a forgotten casualty of the city's underbelly. He was the sole heir to the Moretti family—and the target of a ruthless execution order.
"Dante wants the baby dead so there are no legal heirs to challenge the trust deeds Leo left behind," Sebastian explained calmly, stepping closer to me. "If the state takes him, Dante’s legal team will file for custody through a fraudulent guardianship network they control. Within forty-eight hours, this baby will suffer a 'sudden infant crib death' in a state-run home."
I clutched the baby closer to my chest. Thirteen years in the NICU had shown me the best and worst of humanity, but the thought of someone harming this helpless child made a fierce, protective instinct erupt in my core.
"He can't survive without specialized care," I said, my voice trembling but firm. "He needs a mobile incubator, continuous oxygen, and specialized premature infant formula. Even if you take him, he’ll die in hours without a medical professional."
Sebastian looked at me, his eyes gleaming with a strange, respectful intensity.
"Then pack your bags, Nurse Clara," Sebastian said softly. "Because you're coming with us."
Before I could process his words, the glass doors of the NICU shattered.
A loud concussion echoed through the hallway outside. The emergency alarms began to blare, flashing bright crimson lights across the white walls. Red emergency lights bathed the room in a bloody hue.
"Down!" the bodyguard shouted, drawing a suppressed firearm from his jacket.
Sebastian didn't flinch. He immediately stepped in front of me and the baby, using his broad, muscular frame as a human shield.
Through the shattered glass partition of the hallway, three men in tactical gear advanced, carrying heavy automatic weapons. But before they could clear the doorway, two silenced shots rang out from behind them.
Detective Marcus Vance—the lead investigator on the Moretti task force—stepped over the fallen men, a smoking firearm in his hand.
"Sebastian!" Vance yelled above the blaring alarms, stepping into Pod B. "You crazy bastard! What are you doing in a hospital?!"
"Saving my family, Vance," Sebastian said coldly, without turning around.
Vance looked at me, then at the baby swaddled in my arms. "Clara, get away from him! He’s under federal investigation!"
"Detective," I called out, my heart hammering against my ribs. "These men just shot up an infant intensive care unit! Sebastian isn't the one trying to hurt this baby!"
Vance hesitated, his gun lowered slightly. "The syndicate knows the kid's identity, Sebastian. You can't fight Dante and the entire city council on your own."
"Watch me," Sebastian growled. He turned to me. "Clara. Decision time. Do you let this child become a case file in a coroner's office, or do you step into the dark with me to give him a future?"
I looked down at the tiny baby. He was staring up at me with wide, dark eyes—the same blue-black eyes as Sebastian. He was defenseless. And in a world of wolves, he needed a shepherd who wasn't afraid to fight back.
I reached for the transport incubator unit near the counter, snapping the portable battery pack into place.

"Grab the extra IV bags from the supply closet," I told Sebastian sharply. "We have five minutes before his body temperature drops."
Sebastian smiled—a cold, terrifying, yet deeply grateful smile. "Lead the way, Nurse."
