Chapter 4 - The Blood Charter

The grand parlor on the ground floor was built for intimidation.

High vaulted ceilings, deep mahogany paneling, and a massive stone fireplace where a roaring fire crackled against the damp autumn chill.

Standing near the center rug was Salvatore Falcone.

At sixty-five, Falcone was a survivor of Chicago’s deadliest mob wars. He was thin, silver-haired, with cold blue eyes and a face lined with deep, cruel wrinkles. Surrounding him were six high-ranking family captains, all dressed in expensive suits, their hands tucked inside their coats.

The heavy double doors swept open.

Victor walked into the room alone. He wore no jacket, no body armor—just his black shirt, his dark trousers, and the cold, terrifying presence of a ruler entering his court.

"Salvatore," Victor said smoothly, walking behind his desk and pouring himself two fingers of dark scotch. "You're trespassing on private ground after midnight. That’s a capital offense under the 1984 Chicago Accord."

"Don't talk to me about accords, Victor!" Falcone spat, stepping forward, his cane clicking sharply against the marble floor. "We built this syndicate with your father! We bled in these streets while you were still in private school!"

"And my father is dead," Victor reminded him, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Which leaves me as the sole authority of the Moretti network. State your business before I have my perimeter team clear this room."

"Our business is the girl and the bastards upstairs!" Falcone sneered, his face turning red with anger.

The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees.

Victor set his glass down on the mahogany table without making a sound. "Repeat that word, Salvatore. I dare you."

Falcone didn't back down. "Don Vincenzo swore forty years ago that no illegitimate blood would ever inherit a seat on the syndicate board! You brought Elena Russo's orphans into this fortress tonight! One of those boys is your eldest son, Victor! If the other families find out you have a direct blood heir who isn't bound by the syndicate oath, it creates a civil war!"

"There won't be a civil war," Victor said flatly.

"The board has already voted!" Falcone announced, pulling a folded parchment document from his breast pocket and slamming it onto the desk. "Under the Blood Charter of Don Vincenzo, any heir born outside the family covenant must be surrendered to the board for permanent relocation outside the United States, or the current Don forfeits his territory!"

Victor looked down at the parchment. It bore his father's old wax seal—a relic of an era built on cruelty, control, and shattered lives.

He picked up the paper, held it over the open flame of his desk candle, and watched it turn to black ash in his bare hand.

The six captains gasped, their hands instantly twitching toward their weapons!

"My father's charter died the day he buried my wife alive in lies," Victor said, his voice ringing across the room like a bronze bell. "I am the Don of Chicago now. And my children stay with me."

"Then you leave us no choice, Victor!" Falcone barked, backing toward his men. "By sunrise, every captain from here to Milwaukee will know you've gone soft for a street girl and a bunch of harbor rats! We will strip your territory brick by brick!"

"You're welcome to try, Salvatore," Victor said softly.

He raised his right hand and snapped his fingers.

Instantly, the heavy oak doors behind Falcone slammed shut! The high velvet curtains over the bay windows were pulled back, revealing twenty-eight black-clad Moretti tactical enforcers equipped with night-vision gear and suppressed rifles, their red laser sights instantly painting the chests of Falcone and his six captains!

Falcone’s eyes went wide with pure terror. "Victor... you wouldn't dare execute six captains in your own home!"

"I wouldn't," Victor agreed smoothly, walking up to Falcone until he was towering over the silver-haired traitor. "That would ruin the rug. But I am stripping your territories, seizing your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman, and placing you under permanent house arrest at your compound in Naples."

"You can't do that!" Falcone shrieked.

"Gabriel," Victor commanded without looking back. "Escort Mr. Falcone to the airport. If he touches American soil again... put him in the river."

"Yes, Boss!" Gabriel stepped forward, grabbing Falcone by his collar and dragging him screaming out the side entrance while the remaining enforcers disarmed the six terrified captains.

Victor stood alone in the quiet parlor. He looked down at his hand, covered in black paper ash from his father's burned charter.

He wiped his palm with a white linen handkerchief, tossed it into the fireplace, and turned toward the stairs to find his family.
