Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

At 11:00 PM, the rain turned into a fierce autumn gale that whipped against the high stained-glass windows of the Moretti estate.

Inside the second-floor east wing, the children were fast asleep in four interconnected luxury suites.

Mia and the twins were curled up in a massive king-sized bed beneath soft goose-down comforters, their faces clean and peaceful for the first time in eighteen months. In the adjoining room, Lucas and Noah slept soundly, while Daniel sat in an armchair near the window, his eyes wide open, watching the doorway like a dutiful soldier.

Olivia sat in the hallway outside their doors, wrapped in a dark cashmere cardigan Matteo had given her, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea.

The soft click of leather shoes echoed down the carpeted hallway.

Victor approached, having stripped off his suit jacket and tie. He wore a simple black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dark tattoos of old Sicilian proverbs spiraling up his wrists.

He carried a silver tray with a plate of warm roast beef sandwiches and a glass of red wine, setting it down on the small table beside her chair.

"You haven't eaten since noon," Victor said quietly.

Olivia looked up at him, surprised by the gesture. "Thank you."

Victor looked toward the cracked bedroom door where Noah was sleeping. "The doctors finished the evaluations an hour ago."

Olivia stood up instantly. "And?"

"Noah’s lung infection is early-stage bronchitis, easily treatable with oral antibiotics," Victor reported, his tone softer than usual. "The twins are severely underweight, but their bone density is fine. Daniel has a fractured collarbone that healed incorrectly two years ago—my orthopedic surgeons will reset it next month."

Olivia let out a massive sigh of relief, leaning her back against the wall. "Thank you, Victor. Truly."

Victor didn't answer immediately. He stepped up to the cracked door, peering inside at Noah’s sleeping form.

"He looks like her," Victor murmured softly. "When he looked up at me in that basement... he had her exact eyes."

"He has your chin," Olivia noted with a faint smile. "And your stubbornness. He refused to eat his broccoli at dinner until Matteo promised him he could see the horses in the stable tomorrow."

A faint, genuine smile touched Victor’s lips—the first real smile Olivia had ever seen on his face.

"My father was a monster, Olivia," Victor said, his gaze remaining fixed on his son. "He raised me in blood. He taught me that mercy was a disease and that family was just a tool to maintain leverage over your lieutenants. When Elena disappeared, I believed him. I became the thing he wanted me to be."

He turned his head to look at Olivia, his dark eyes brimming with resolve.

"I won't let them grow up the way I did," Victor vowed. "They won't know the syndicate. They won't know the violence. I will clean this city, Olivia, if it’s the last thing I do."

Before Olivia could reply, the emergency lights along the hallway floor suddenly flashed red!

A low, pulsing alarm chimed softly through the estate's hidden speakers.

Gabriel, the head of security, came sprinting up the grand staircase, his heavy tactical vest strapped over his suit, a drawn pistol in his hand.

"Boss!" Gabriel called out out of breath. "We have a situation at the front gate!"

Victor instantly shifted back into the feared mafia kingpin, his posture hardening like steel. "Report."

"Salvatore Falcone just pulled up to the main entrance in a armored limousine," Gabriel reported urgently. "He brought six syndicate captains with him. They are demanding an immediate meeting with the Don. They claim you’ve violated the syndicate charter by harboring untraced civilians in the main estate without board approval."

Olivia’s heart seized. "Falcone knows."

"Of course he knows," Victor said coldly, pulling a sleek, dark silver semi-automatic pistol from a hidden holster beneath his shoulder strap. "He’s been waiting for my father's ghost to drag me down."

He turned to Olivia, grabbing her by the shoulders.

"Take the kids into the safe room behind the study," Victor ordered her, his voice absolute. "Do not open that door for anyone except me or Gabriel. Do you understand?"

May you like

"Victor, don't do this alone," Olivia pleaded, gripping his wrists. "Falcone has half the Chicago families behind him!"

"They have numbers, Olivia," Victor said, his eyes burning with lethal confidence as he racked the slide of his pistol with a loud clack. "I have something to protect. They don't stand a chance."
