Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The flight to London was a ten-hour sanctuary of peace.

By the time the Boeing 777 leveled out over the dark expanse of the Atlantic, the children were fast asleep under warm blankets. I sat in the quiet glow of the cabin light, holding a cup of hot tea, looking out the window at the stars.

For ten years, I had been the quiet wife. I had been the woman who stayed at home, who accepted his excuses when he came home late smelling of another woman's perfume, who smiled for the family photos while his mother made passive-aggressive comments about my middle-class upbringing.

They thought my silence was weakness. They thought my compliance was stupidity.

They didn't know that my father, before his passing, had been one of the most respected forensic accountants in the state. He had taught me how to read numbers before I could even read full novels. “Numbers don't lie, Sarah,” he had told me when I was just a girl, sitting at his large oak desk. “People can paint any picture they want with words, but the ledgers always tell the truth.”

When I first suspected Bradley’s betrayal two years ago, I didn't scream. I didn't throw a scene. I quietly began digging.

I had installed a keystroke logger on our home computer. I had made copies of every tax return, every bank statement, and every encrypted file he thought he had deleted. I had watched him build a digital fortress of lies, and I had slowly, methodically dismantled it brick by brick, storing the evidence in a secure cloud server that only Mr. Harrison could access.

A soft chime broke the silence of my thoughts. The plane’s Wi-Fi had connected, and my phone began to light up with a barrage of texts and missed calls.

Most of them were from Bradley.

[Bradley: Sarah, call me right now. What did you do to my accounts? This is illegal!]

[Bradley: I know you’re behind this. You can't freeze my corporate funds. That’s my father's business too! You’re going to ruin us!]

[Bradley: Sarah, please. Answer the phone. We can talk about this. We can settle this privately.]

I scrolled past his messages without a single spark of emotion. Then, I saw a text from Brittany.

[Brittany: You vindictive bitch. You think you can destroy our family? Tiffany is pregnant with Bradley’s baby! He has a real legacy now, and you’re just a bitter ex-wife who will end up with nothing!]

I stared at Brittany’s text for a long moment. Then, with a slow, deliberate movement, I typed a single, brief reply.

“Ask your brother to show you his medical records from three weeks ago. The ones from the Liberty Clinic. Especially page three.”

I hit send, switched my phone back to airplane mode, and took a long, satisfying sip of my tea.

The dark waters of the Atlantic rolled beneath us, carrying me and my children further and further away from the poison they called love.
