Chapter 2 - The Taste of Champagne and Deceit

At the VIP lounge of the Liberty Fertility Center, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of lilies and expensive perfume.

Bradley walked through the frosted glass doors, his coat slung over his arm, his chest puffed out with the pride of a man who had just conquered his world. He had divorced the woman who had held him back, kept his multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio intact, and was about to secure his legacy.

"There he is!" Brittany squealed, rushing forward to throw her arms around her brother's neck. "The free man! Honestly, Brad, the look on Sarah’s face when she walked out of that mediator's office must have been priceless. Did she cry?"

"Not a tear," Bradley smirked, accepting a flute of Cristal from his father, Harold. "She tried to act tough. Carried some cheap passports and claimed she was taking the kids to London. Probably staying in some low-end motel on her father's dime. Let her. It saves me the trouble of paying child support."

"Good riddance," Diane, his mother, sniffed, smoothing down her designer dress. "She never did fit into our social circle. Always talking about 'saving' and 'budgeting.' Now, look at our gorgeous Tiffany."

Across the private room, Tiffany sat on a plush velvet chaise lounge. She looked radiant, wearing a loose-fitting white silk dress that barely covered a tiny, almost imperceptible bump. She held a glass of sparkling cider, her face the picture of delicate, triumphant motherhood.

"Bradley," Tiffany murmured, holding out her hand as he approached. He knelt beside her, kissing her hand with a performative devotion that made his family coo. "Is it really over? Are we finally free to build our family?"

"Entirely, sweetheart," Bradley smiled, placing his hand over hers. "The penthouse is ours. The assets are locked down. There is nothing Sarah can do to touch us. Today is the first day of our new life. And our son," he looked down at her stomach, his voice filled with a smug satisfaction, "will inherit everything I’ve built."

"To the future heir of the Bennett Group!" Harold announced, raising his glass.

"To the heir!" the family chimed in, their glasses clinking in a symphony of high-society validation.

But the celebration was cut short by the sharp, persistent vibration of Bradley's phone on the glass table. He frowned, looking at the screen. It was an email notification from his corporate banking app.

Then another.

And another.

"What is that?" Brittany asked, her glass stopping halfway to her mouth.

Bradley unlocked his phone. The screen displayed three consecutive red alert banners from the Bennett Group’s primary treasury account.

[ALERT: Corporate Account ending in -8809 has been frozen by court order. File Ref: NY-DIV-9921-B.]

[ALERT: Asset Transfer under 'T.L. Holdings' flagged for investigation of fraudulent conveyance. Funds held in escrow.]

[ALERT: Deposition Request served to Bradley Bennett. Appearance mandatory: Friday, 10:00 AM.]

The color drained from Bradley’s face so fast he looked as though he might vomit. He stood up, nearly knocking over his champagne glass.

"What's wrong, Brad?" Diane asked, her smile fading.

"This... this is a glitch," Bradley whispered, his fingers trembling as he tried to call his personal banker. "It has to be. Sarah didn't have the lawyers for this. She didn't have the money..."

Before the call could connect, his phone rang. The caller ID showed the name of his lead corporate attorney, Arthur Vance.

Bradley answered it on the first ring, his voice cracking. "Arthur! What the hell is going on with my accounts? Why are they frozen?"

"Bradley, where are you?" Arthur’s voice was frantic, stripped of its usual polished composure. "We’ve just been served with a forensic audit order. Sarah’s legal team didn't use a local family court lawyer, Bradley. They hired Harrison & Partners—the top white-collar defense firm in the country. They’ve submitted two years of hidden ledger entries, tax evasion records, and proof of offshore transfers under your mistress’s name."

Bradley’s eyes darted to Tiffany, who was watching him with a sudden, sharp look of anxiety.

"What do you mean 'offshore transfers'?" Bradley gasped. "Those were private!"

"They have the exact IP addresses of the computers used to make the transfers, Bradley," Arthur hissed. "They have the signatures. They’ve flagged the purchase of the luxury condo you bought for Tiffany as a fraudulent diversion of marital assets. The judge has ordered a freeze on all your personal and corporate accounts until the audit is complete. You have nothing, Bradley. You can't even pay my retainer right now."

Bradley felt the room tilt. He looked around at his family, who were watching him in horror.

"And Bradley?" Arthur’s voice carried one last, devastating blow through the speaker. "There’s a personal document attached to the filing. A certified medical report from the Liberty Fertility Center. I suggest you read it. Immediately."
