Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

The morning mist clung heavily to the manicured lawns and towering hedges of the Rinaldi estate, turning the sprawling gardens into a ghost landscape of gray and green. Inside the grand dining hall, the breakfast table groaned under the weight of silver platters, fresh pastries, and steaming pots of imported Colombian coffee.
Massimo Rinaldi sat at the head of the long mahogany table, dressed in his customary black vest and immaculate white shirt. His face was a mask of stone, illuminated by the pale morning light pouring through the stained-glass windows. Despite his paralysis, his presence commanded the room, casting a heavy shadow over everyone present.
Camille Ashwood sat to his right, elegantly buttering a brioche toast. Her blonde hair was swept up into a sophisticated chignon, and her emerald-green eyes flickered with restless ambition. She was a woman born into old money that had long since dried up, and her upcoming marriage to the reigning king of the underworld was her final ticket back to absolute luxury and power.
"The florist called from Manhattan," Camille said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "She needs your final approval on the floral arrangements for the chapel, Massimo. White lilies and crimson roses? Or do you prefer something more... traditional?"
"Do whatever you want, Camille," Massimo replied flatly, without looking up from his black coffee. "A wedding is just a formality. You’ll have the house, the name, and the accounts. The details are yours to manage."
Camille’s jaw tightened slightly at his cold indifference, but she forced a tight smile. "It’s our wedding, darling. I want it to be perfect."
Dean Foster entered the dining hall just then, adjusting his cuffs with practiced ease. He pulled out the chair directly opposite Camille, flashing a warm, disarming smile toward Massimo.
"Morning, Boss," Dean said cheerfully. "Morning, Camille. Dull day ahead. Just reviewing the dock security logs from Newark. The union reps are acting up again, but don't worry, I’ve got everything under control. You just focus on resting and getting ready for the ceremony."
Massimo nodded slowly, his gray eyes fixing on Dean with that profound, unquestioning trust that had been forged in the blood and smoke of Brooklyn Avenue. "I know I can count on you, Dean. You’ve proven that more times than I can ever repay."
"Family takes care of family, Massimo," Dean replied smoothly, pouring himself a cup of black coffee. "That's what brothers do."
At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the dining hall cracked open. Carla Bennett stood in the threshold, holding a silver tray with fresh napkins, her eyes respectfully fixed on the floor. Behind her peeked Nina, clutching her small ragdoll by its arm, her wide dark eyes darting curiously around the grand, intimidating room.
"Excuse me, Mr. Rinaldi," Carla said softly, her voice barely audible. "I came to clear the dessert plates from yesterday's tea."
"Come in, Carla," Massimo said, his stern expression softening just a fraction as his gaze drifted toward the little girl. "And bring Nina here. She hasn't brought me her water basin yet this morning."
Nina’s face lit up with a gap-toothed smile at the mention of her name. Breaking away from her mother’s side, she scampered across the polished marble floor, her small shoes clicking rhythmically until she reached Massimo’s wheelchair.
She leaned against his knee, looking up into his weathered, scarred face with utter adoration.
"Uncle Massimo," Nina chirped, reaching into the deep pocket of her pinafore dress. "I found a shiny little pebble yesterday. Look!"
She opened her tiny palm. Resting in the center of her chubby hand was a small, perfectly round, unmarked white pill.
The entire dining hall seemed to freeze in an instant.
Dean Foster’s hand stopped halfway to his coffee cup, his knuckles turning stark white against the porcelain. Across the table, Dr. Hale—who had just stepped into the doorway to deliver his morning medical charts—turned the color of fresh ash, his breath catching painfully in his throat.

Massimo looked down at the child’s hand, his brow furrowing in deep, sudden confusion. "Where did you get that, Nina?"
"A funny man with glasses dropped it by the library door," Nina replied innocently, pointing a small finger directly at Dr. Julian Hale standing frozen in the entrance.
