Chapter 13 - The Trap on Fourth Street

-13-

The crisp Tuesday morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting a bright, cheerful light over the bustling farmer's market on Fourth Street in downtown Brooklyn. Stalls laden with fresh apples, pumpkins, and artisan cheeses lined the sidewalk, while local residents milled about in heavy coats, enjoying the brisk morning air.

Carla Bennett pushed a wooden shopping cart loaded with fresh vegetables, keeping a watchful eye on little Nina, who was skipping ahead, her curly brown hair bouncing as she chased a stray pigeon near the edge of a flower bed.

"Don't wander too far, sweetie," Carla called out with a warm smile.

"I'm just playing with the bird, mama!" Nina giggled.

What Carla didn't notice—what no ordinary civilian would ever notice—was the subtle, coordinated movement of three unmarked sedan cars pulling up along the curb fifty yards away.

Four men in dark jackets stepped out of the vehicles, moving with practiced, predatory stealth through the dense morning crowd. They weren't looking at the produce; their eyes were locked entirely on the little girl by the flower bed.

Vince led the pack, his hand sliding inside his jacket pocket to grip the cold steel of a silenced pistol. "Grab the kid, toss her in the van, and let's move before the estate escort catches up," he muttered into his lapel communicator.

As Vince lunged forward through the crowd, his gloved hand reaching out to grab Nina’s arm, the entire world around them seemed to explode into chaotic motion.

CRASH!

An unmarked black SUV slammed sideways across the street, cutting off the escape route of the Bellandi vehicles with screeching tires. From every direction—disguised as fruit vendors, tourists, and street sweepers—six elite Rinaldi enforcers materialized instantly, their weapons drawn and leveled with terrifying precision.

"Federal—er, Rinaldi security! Don't move a muscle!" shouted Marcus, stepping out from behind a vegetable stall with a shotgun aimed straight at Vince’s chest.

Vince froze, his hand still hovering inches from Nina. He turned his head frantically, realizing too late that they hadn't just walked into a trap—they had been invited into one.

Before Vince could draw his pistol, Marcus fired a single beanbag round straight into his abdomen. The heavy impact lifted Vince off his feet and slammed him hard against a stack of wooden apple crates, knocking the wind and consciousness out of him simultaneously.

Rico and the other two operatives drew their weapons, but before they could squeeze a single trigger, three distinct, muffled thuds echoed through the market. Rinaldi snipers positioned on the surrounding rooftops neutralized the threat with surgical precision, shooting the weapons directly out of their hands and pinning them to the pavement.

The entire firefight lasted less than four seconds.

The civilian shoppers screamed and scattered behind market stalls, while Nina, startled by the sudden noise, burst into loud, frightened tears.

Carla dropped her shopping cart, sprinting desperately toward her daughter and sweeping her up into her arms, burying the child's face against her shoulder. "Nina! Oh, my sweet baby, are you okay?"

"I want to go home, mama," Nina sobbed.

Marcus walked over to the groaning, zip-tied form of Vince, kicking the fallen pistol away with his boot. He tapped his lapel communicator, connecting directly to the private line in Massimo’s Manhattan office.

"Boss," Marcus reported calmly over the secure channel. "The package is secure. The Bellandi rats tried to bite the hook on Fourth Street. All four are neutralized and in custody."
