Chapter 3 - The Secret Lab in the East Wing

-3-

Midnight in the Rinaldi manor was a time of absolute, oppressive stillness, broken only by the ticking of antique clocks and the howling coastal wind. In the subterranean level of the east wing—a forgotten relic of the estate's prohibition-era past—a hidden door stood slightly ajar, leaking a faint, sterile white light into the dark stone corridor.

Dr. Julian Hale sat at a gleaming stainless-steel workbench, surrounded by racks of centrifuge tubes, digital scales, and amber glass vials. The elite physician, celebrated across New York for his surgical brilliance and compassionate bedside manner, looked entirely different under the harsh fluorescent lights. His coat was off, his sleeves rolled up, revealing taut, nervous forearms.

On the center of the desk sat a small, sophisticated electronic tablet, flashing with encrypted data feeds communicating directly with an offshore server in the Cayman Islands.

The door clicked open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, and Dean Foster stepped into the laboratory, loosening his tie. He didn't look like a recovering hero with a healing shoulder; his stride was fluid, powerful, and utterly devoid of the sluggishness of an invalid.

"The report," Dean demanded quietly, pulling up a steel stool and sitting down across from the doctor.

Dr. Hale wiped a hand across his forehead, his fingers trembling slightly. "The paralysis is holding, Dean. The neurotoxin I’ve been synthesizing and administering through his daily vitamin supplements is binding permanently to his lower lumbar nerve clusters. If he keeps taking it, the cellular degeneration will become irreversible within another three months. Even if he wanted to walk, his nervous system simply won't fire the signals."

Dean leaned back, a dark, calculating smile spreading across his face. "And the autopsy report when the time comes?"

"Natural causes," Dr. Hale replied smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "A progressive systemic failure secondary to spinal shock. No coroner in the state will look twice at it, especially given the catastrophic nature of the Brooklyn Avenue ambush."

"Good," Dean muttered, swirling a glass of clear liquid on the desk. "Everything is falling into place. The wedding with Camille is set for next month. Once we finalize the merger with the Brooklyn syndicate under my name, Massimo's signature won't even matter anymore. We’ll legally absorb his entire estate, and the Rinaldi name will belong to us."

"And the girl?" Dr. Hale asked cautiously, glancing toward the ceiling. "The housekeeper's kid? She's always wandering around the library, poking her nose into places she shouldn't."

Dean’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory squint. "She’s a toddler, Julian. She doesn't know a pill from a piece of candy. But if she becomes a nuisance, we’ll handle her the same way we handled the last problem on Brooklyn Avenue. Quietly."

What neither Dean Foster nor Dr. Julian Hale realized as they plotted the total destruction of the Rinaldi dynasty was that the very child they were dismissing so casually had already seized the ultimate piece of evidence. In her small cot down the hall, Nina slept soundly, her tiny hand wrapped tightly around the exact synthetic neurotoxin pill Dr. Hale had dropped that afternoon—a physical fragment of their conspiracy that had slipped right through their arrogant fingers.
