CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

“Tell me.”

Henry's voice was quiet.

But impossible to ignore.

“Why does this hurt you so much?”

Grace's hands trembled.

She looked at Noah.

Then at Henry.

For years she had remained silent.

For years she had hidden the truth.

But Noah's tears shattered the last of her strength.

“Because...”

Her voice broke.

“Because he's mine.”

The room exploded.

Gasps echoed off the marble walls.

Vivian stepped backward.

“No!”

Grace wiped away tears.

“Yes.”

Henry stared at her.

Unable to breathe.

“What are you saying?”

Grace reached into her apron pocket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And removed a faded envelope.

Inside was a hospital document.

And a birth certificate.

Henry took the papers with shaking hands.

His eyes widened.

The mother's name.

Grace Ellis.

The father's name.

Henry Whitmore.

The ballroom fell into stunned silence.

Vivian's face turned white.

Because the secret she had buried for years was now sitting in Henry's hands.

Grace finally spoke.

“You were told I left.”

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“You were told I didn't want him.”

Henry's heart pounded.

Because that was exactly what Vivian had told him years ago.

“She said you abandoned us.”

Grace shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“She paid me to disappear.”

The guests gasped again.

Vivian covered her mouth.

Caught.

Exposed.

Destroyed.

For years she had hidden the truth.

She had taken Grace's place.

Raised another woman's child.

And convinced Henry that the real mother had walked away.

Noah looked between them in confusion.

Then reached for Grace.

She hugged him tightly.

And at that moment, Henry finally understood what his son had revealed with a single innocent word.

The greatest lie in Whitmore House had never come from a business rival.

Or a family enemy.

It came from the woman he was about to marry.

May you like

And now, in front of every guest in the mansion, that lie was finally collapsing.
