CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET EVERYONE IGNORED

The ballroom remained silent.

No one knew what to say.

Henry slowly walked toward his crying son.

“Noah.”

The little boy immediately clung to Grace.

Refusing to let go.

The sight unsettled him.

Because children don't fake safety.

They don't pretend trust.

They run to the person who protects them.

“Why does he call you Mommy?”

The question landed heavily.

Grace lowered her eyes.

Vivian answered before she could.

“He’s a child.”

Her voice was sharp.

“He doesn't understand.”

But Henry wasn't looking at Vivian.

He was watching Grace.

And he noticed something.

Tears.

Not embarrassment.

Not fear.

Heartbreak.

The kind that comes from losing something precious.

Then an elderly guest stepped forward.

Mrs. Davenport.

A woman who had known the Whitmore family for decades.

Her eyes narrowed.

“I've seen this before.”

Everyone turned.

She pointed toward Noah.

“When he was a baby.”

Vivian stiffened.

Mrs. Davenport continued.

“That child spent every waking moment with Grace.”

Henry frowned.

“What?”

Vivian's face paled.

The older woman nodded.

“You were traveling constantly.”

“Vivian was rarely home.”

“But Grace...”

She looked at the housekeeper.

“Grace raised him.”

Whispers spread across the room.

The pieces began fitting together.

The late-night feedings.

The scraped knees.

The bedtime stories.

The nightmares.

The hugs.

Grace had been there for all of it.

Henry looked at Noah.

Then at Grace.

Then at Vivian.

And suddenly he realized something terrifying.

His son wasn't calling Grace “Mommy” because he was confused.

He was calling her that because she was the closest thing he had ever known to a mother.

But that still didn't explain one thing.

May you like

Why did Grace look so devastated every time Noah said the word?

Almost as if the truth hurt.
