CHAPTER 1 “‘Mommy’: The Word That Destroyed an Engagement”

CHAPTER 1: THE WORD THAT STOPPED THE PARTY

Noah Whitmore’s tiny voice should have disappeared beneath the chandeliers, music, and laughter.

Instead, it became the loudest sound in Whitmore House.

The mansion glittered with wealth.

Crystal chandeliers spilled golden light across white marble floors.

Champagne flowed.

Guests smiled.

Everything was perfect.

Or at least it looked perfect.

At the center of the celebration stood Henry Whitmore and his fiancée, Vivian Blackwood.

Vivian wore a black silk dress and a smile polished enough for magazine covers.

One hand rested possessively on Henry’s arm.

The other occasionally touched Noah’s shoulder whenever guests were watching.

To everyone in the room, they looked like a perfect family.

But Noah knew better.

The three-year-old stood quietly among strangers, searching the crowd.

Not for his father.

Not for attention.

For comfort.

Then he saw her.

Grace Ellis.

The housekeeper.

She stood near the wall in a simple cream-colored uniform.

Quiet.

Invisible.

Exactly where the staff were expected to remain.

The moment Noah spotted her, everything changed.

His face lit up.

His little legs moved before anyone could stop him.

He ran.

Past guests.

Past waiters.

Past his father.

Straight into Grace’s arms.

She dropped to her knees and caught him instantly.

Not like an employee.

Like someone who loved him.

Noah buried his face against her shoulder.

And then he said the word that froze the entire ballroom.

“Mommy.”

The room went silent.

Grace closed her eyes.

Pain flashed across her face.

“I’m here, sweetheart,” she whispered.

The guests exchanged shocked glances.

Henry stood motionless.

Vivian’s smile vanished.

Then she stormed across the room.

“What are you doing?”

Before anyone could react, Vivian grabbed Noah’s arm and yanked him away.

The little boy screamed.

Grace reached toward him.

“Please don't pull him like that.”

Vivian shoved her.

Grace fell hard onto the marble floor.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

Noah burst into tears.

“I want Mommy!”

The child stretched his arms toward Grace.

“I want Mommy!”

And for the first time all evening, Henry stopped seeing Grace as a housekeeper.

Because his son wasn't confused.

He was terrified.
