Chapter 5 - The Trial of Providence

The legal war that followed over the next three months shook the city of Providence to its core.

With Jude Mercer’s vast resources, high-powered legal team, and ironclad evidence, Tristan Wells stood trial before a federal judge for wire fraud, corporate espionage, child abandonment, and criminal conspiracy.

The courtroom was packed with news reporters, high-society spectators, and federal prosecutors.

On the final day of the trial, Audrey sat at the plaintiff’s table. She looked stunning, wearing an elegant cream-colored blazer, her hair styled neatly, her posture posture proud and unwavering. Beside her sat Jude Mercer, wearing a charcoal suit, his broad shoulder subtly protecting her from the cameras.

Tristan sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, looking hollow, ruined, and defeated.

The federal judge slammed her gavel down.

CRACK!

“Tristan Wells,” Judge Evelyn Carter declared, her sharp voice filling the packed room. “Your actions demonstrate a chilling level of calculated deceit, financial predation, and complete disregard for human life—specifically the lives of your own wife and child.”

The judge looked at the thick stack of financial documents provided by Jude’s legal team.

“This court hereby sentences you to twenty-two years in federal prison without eligibility for parole,” Judge Carter ruled. “Furthermore, all assets previously held under your name, as well as seized offshore accounts, are hereby permanently transferred to the sole ownership of Audrey Wells and the educational trust of Brinley Wells.”

CRACK!

Cheering broke out among the spectators. Tristan lowered his head into his hands, weeping pathetically as federal marshals led him away in chains. He didn't receive a single look of pity from Audrey.

Outside the courthouse steps, a swarm of reporters surrounded Jude and Audrey.

“Mr. Mercer! Mr. Mercer!” a reporter yelled, holding out a microphone. “Is it true that the Mercer syndicate is completely liquidating its enforcement divisions and transitioning into legitimate commercial logistics?”

Jude stopped on the top step, holding Audrey’s hand tightly in his.

“The Mercer estate is officially a private holdings enterprise,” Jude announced calmly into the microphones. “All unlawful operations have been permanently dissolved. My priority is building a clean, safe future for this city—and for my family.”

Audrey looked up at Jude, her heart swelling with an overwhelming rush of love and admiration.

He hadn't just saved her from Tristan’s debt. He had dismantled his own dark past, walking away from a criminal empire just to ensure that she and Brinley would never have to live in fear again.

As they got into the back of the sleek black sedan, Audrey leaned over, resting her head against Jude’s chest.

“Thank you, Jude,” she whispered softly, closing her eyes as his strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close.

“You don't ever have to thank me, Audrey,” Jude murmured into her hair, kissing the top of her head. “You and Brinley gave me back my soul.”
