Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Dark

The peaceful sanctuary of the Mercer estate was shattered two weeks later on a rainy Tuesday night.

At 11:30 PM, a convoy of three dark SUVs pulled up to the outer perimeter gates.

Inside the lead vehicle sat Tristan Wells, accompanied by four heavy-set men wearing tactical gear—enforcers belonging to the Moretti crime syndicate, Jude’s fiercest rivals in New England.

Tristan had realized his offshore accounts were frozen and his mistress had fled with his remaining cash. Desperate, greedy, and cornered, he had cut a deal with the Moretti family, offering to give them access codes to Jude’s estate layout in exchange for ten percent of the stolen ledgers.

Inside the mansion, red security lights silently flashed in Jude’s private command center.

“Boss,” Reggie said, racking the slide of his tactical rifle. “We have five hostiles entering through the east drainage point. Tristan Wells is leading them. He used an old service contractor pass key.”

Jude stood in front of the surveillance monitors, his eyes fixed on the feed showing Tristan moving through the dark gardens with armed men behind him.

A cold, terrifying fury surged through Jude’s veins—not because someone was breaking into his home, but because those men were walking toward the wing where Audrey and Brinley were sleeping.

“Lock down the west wing,” Jude ordered, his voice echoing like thunder. “Move Audrey and the child into my safe room. Non-lethal force on Tristan. I want that bastard alive.”

Moments later, Audrey woke up to the sound of soft alarms.

Before panic could set in, the door to her room opened, and Jude stepped inside. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. He wore a dark tactical shirt, a leather holster strapped across his broad chest, his presence formidable and absolute.

“Jude! What’s happening?!” Audrey gasped, pulling a sleepy Brinley into her arms.

Jude walked over, dropping to his knees beside her bed. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping Audrey’s cheek, his touch surprisingly tender despite the chaos.

“You’re safe,” Jude promised, looking straight into her eyes. “Listen to me, Audrey. Reggie is taking you to my private shelter on the lower level. Nobody can breach those doors. I am going to end this tonight.”

Audrey looked at him, tears springing to her eyes. She didn't fear him anymore. She feared for him.

“Please be careful,” Audrey whispered, reaching up to cover his hand with hers.

Jude’s eyes softened. He leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss against Brinley’s forehead, then looked back at Audrey. “I have something to come back to now. I won't lose.”

Ten minutes later, inside the grand glass conservatory at the center of the mansion, glass shattered.

Tristan Wells stepped through the broken frame holding a pistol, his face flushed with sweat and greed. “Clear the room!” he barked at his two hired guards. “The ledgers are in the main desk!”

“Looking for these?” a voice spoke from the shadows.

Tristan spun around.

Jude Mercer stepped out from behind a marble pillar. He moved with the terrifying, silent grace of a apex predator. Before Tristan’s guards could even raise their weapons, muffled shots from suppressed rifles rang out from the upper balcony.

The two Moretti enforcers dropped to the floor, disarmed and neutralized instantly by Reggie’s security team.

Tristan backed away in pure terror, dropping his gun onto the stone floor with a loud clatter.

“Jude! Please!” Tristan whimpered, his hands flying into the air, his knees knocking together. “It was Moretti’s idea! They forced me! I came to get my wife and daughter! I was trying to save them from you!”

Jude stepped forward, grabbing Tristan by the collar of his jacket with one hand, lifting the coward off his feet, and slamming him against the cold brick wall.

“Save them?” Jude spat, his scar twisting in disgust. “You left them to die. You used your own child’s future as a shield for your pathetic greed.”

“I’m her father!” Tristan screamed, struggling for air. “You can’t keep my family from me!”

Jude leaned in, his dark eyes burning with an infernal rage that made Tristan choke on his own breath.

“You lost the right to call yourself a father the moment you traded their lives for a yacht,” Jude whispered coldly. “You are nothing to them. And if you ever speak their names again, I won't call the police. I’ll handle you myself.”

Jude threw Tristan to the floor, where Reggie immediately pinned him down, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

“Take him to the federal precinct,” Jude ordered, turning his back on the groveling coward. “Hand over all the evidence. Make sure he spends the next twenty years behind bars.”
