Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Tristan Wells

By 2:00 AM, the mansion was engulfed in quiet darkness.

Inside her room in the west wing, Audrey sat on the edge of the bed, rocking a fast-asleep Brinley in her arms. Tears ran down Audrey’s cheeks. The sheer terror of seeing her daughter in Jude Mercer’s study was still sending shivers down her spine.

We have to leave, Audrey thought desperately. I don't care about the debt. I don't care if we have to live on the streets. I cannot let my daughter stay in a house with monsters.

Suddenly, a soft, precise knock sounded at her door.

Audrey stiffened, gently laying Brinley on the pillows. She walked over, her hands shaking, and opened the door two inches.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway was Reggie Shaw. He was holding a thick manila folder under his arm, his face serious and unreadable.

“Mr. Mercer wants to see you,” Reggie said quietly. “Alone.”

Audrey swallowed hard, her throat feeling like glass. “Is... is he going to hurt us?”

Reggie looked at her, his stern eyes softening just a fraction. “If Jude wanted to hurt you, Mrs. Wells, you wouldn't be standing in this hallway right now. Put on your sweater. Don't wake the kid.”

Three minutes later, Audrey stood inside Jude’s study once again.

The gun had been removed from the desk. Jude sat in a high-backed leather chair, sipping his whiskey, watching her step into the warm glow of the desk lamp.

“Sit down, Audrey,” Jude commanded, gesturing to the leather chair across from him.

Audrey sat on the very edge of the seat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “Mr. Mercer, I am so deeply sorry about earlier. Brinley didn't mean any disrespect. She’s just a child—”

“I didn't bring you here to talk about your daughter,” Jude interrupted, setting his glass down with a soft clack. “I brought you here to talk about your husband.”

Audrey blinked, startled. “Tristan?”

Jude opened the manila folder on his desk and turned it toward her. Inside were high-resolution surveillance photographs, bank transfer statements, and fake passport documents.

“Your husband didn't just borrow $187,000 from my loan division, Audrey,” Jude revealed, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “He stole it. And he didn't do it to pay off gambling debts or medical bills like he told you.”

Audrey’s breath caught in her chest as she looked at the photographs.

They showed Tristan—the man who had sworn to love and protect her—standing on a yacht in Miami, smiling broadly beside a glamorous blonde woman, holding a glass of champagne. The timestamp on the photos was from four days ago.

“He planned his disappearance for eight months,” Jude continued, his voice cold, factual, and unrelenting. “He used your name as the primary guarantor on the offshore loan papers, forged your signature on the deed to your mother’s small house, and took off with his mistress to Florida under an alias.”

Tears blurred Audrey’s vision, but they were no longer tears of fear. They were tears of pure, agonizing shock and betrayal.

Six years of marriage. Six years of working two jobs to support his failed 'business ventures.' Six years of believing he was a good man who had simply fallen on hard times.

“He left us,” Audrey whispered, her voice cracking. “He left me and Brinley with nothing... and handed us over to you.”

“He thought I would eliminate you when the debt defaulted,” Jude said brutally. “He counted on my reputation. He assumed that once you were gone, nobody would be left to contest the fraudulent signatures, allowing him to claim your mother’s estate insurance payout.”

Audrey buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently with silent, heartbroken sobs. She had been abandoned, set up, and framed by the man she had trusted most in the world.

Jude watched her silently. He knew betrayal. He had lived in its shadow his entire life. But seeing this innocent woman crushed under the weight of her husband’s cowardice stirred a fierce, dark protectiveness inside him.

“I don't kill women and children, Audrey,” Jude spoke, his voice low and firm. “And I don't let bastards like Tristan Wells use my name to execute their dirty work.”

Audrey raised her head, wiping her eyes frantically. “What... what are you going to do to us?”

Jude reached across his desk, pulling the silver star sticker Brinley had left off his ledger, holding it between his fingers.

“Your debt is frozen,” Jude declared. “You and your daughter stay in this house under my protection. You will continue your duties, and in return, my legal team will dismantle every forged document Tristan created.”

Audrey stared at him in disbelief. “Why? Why would you help us?”

Jude looked down at the silver star in his hand, his eyes unreadable. “Because your daughter gave me a bear when she thought I was sad. And because Tristan Wells made a fatal mistake when he brought his mess to my front gate.”
