Chapter 9 - The European Trail

London was beautiful but grey, the rain tapping a rhythmic beat against the windows of our temporary office suite in Mayfair. For two weeks, Mrs. Parker and I lived on espresso and spreadsheets, digging through five years of Aethelgard’s cross-border transactions.

The fraud here was even more sophisticated than Silverline’s. Julian Vance wasn't just inflating asset values; he was using advanced algorithmic trading models to artificially suppress the tech startup’s valuation, allowing Apex Capital to buy up majority shares from the founders at a fraction of their worth before the public offering.

It was a predatory, silent corporate execution. And the founders had no idea they were being pushed out of their own company.

On Thursday night, I was reviewing the server access logs when I noticed a familiar digital signature format—the exact same customized encryption protocol that Victor Vance had used to hide the Calloway kickbacks.

My hands flew across the keyboard. I bypassed the secondary firewall, tracing the origin point of the protocol. It didn't lead to London or New York. It led straight to a secure terminal located inside the minimum-security federal facility in upstate New York where Arthur Calloway was serving his time.

Arthur was running a secondary consultancy firm from behind bars, using his cousin’s network to continue his financial schemes.

"Eleanor, look at this," I called out, my voice tight with a mix of shock and utter disdain.

Mrs. Parker walked over, adjusting her glasses as she read the terminal routing. "He just couldn't stop, could he? The arrogance of these men is their ultimate undoing. They truly believe they are smarter than the entire system."

"They thought they were hidden," I said, generating a comprehensive forensic report and instantly carbon-copying the federal prosecutor who had handled the Silverline case. "But they forgot that I know their digital handwriting better than anyone else in the world. Arthur didn't learn his lesson, so now he’s going to get his sentence extended."

As I hit the send button, the weight of the past two years completely lifted from my shoulders. The final link to the Calloway family’s shadow had been severed by my own hands. I wasn't just a survivor of their abuse anymore; I was the architect of their complete and final accountability.

We caught the morning flight back to New York. As the plane climbed above the clouds into the bright, clear blue sky, I leaned back in my first-class seat, closing my eyes with a deep, peaceful sigh. I was going home to my son. I was going home to the life I had built with integrity, intelligence, and courage.
