Chapter 5 - The Showdown at Dusk

Arthur took a step toward me, but Mrs. Parker instantly moved between us, her hand resting near the panic button under her desk.

"You think you’re clever, don't you?" Arthur hissed, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and desperation. "You think some old spreadsheets you stole off Ryan’s laptop are going to bring down a company that has existed for three generations? We will have those documents struck from the record by tomorrow morning. We will sue you for corporate espionage, and you will spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary while my son raises Liam."

"They aren't stolen, Arthur," I said evenly. "As Ryan’s wife, I had full legal access to our shared household digital devices. And as a certified senior corporate auditor, I have a professional obligation to report evidence of ongoing wire fraud and money laundering to the appropriate authorities. In fact, I’ve already sent a complete duplicate of the archive to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s whistleblower portal. They acknowledged receipt at 2:15 p.m."

Victor Vance gasped, his face draining of all color. He grabbed Arthur’s arm, whispering frantically, "Arthur, if the SEC has the raw transactional data, we can't block it. The jurisdiction changes completely. This isn't a family law issue anymore."

Arthur looked at me as if he were seeing me for the very first time. The quiet girl who had endured his wife’s backhanded compliments about her upbringing, the exhausted mother who had quietly cleaned the kitchen while his family drank expensive scotch—she was gone. In her place stood the woman who had once dismantled a major energy firm's fraudulent accounting structure before she turned twenty-six.

"What do you want, Claire?" Arthur asked, his voice suddenly hollow, the fight leaving him all at once. "Money? Name your price. Five million? Ten? We can set up a trust for Liam that makes him a wealthy man before he enters kindergarten."

"I don't want your stolen money, Arthur," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "I want exactly three things. First, full and absolute legal and physical custody of Liam, with zero visitation rights for Ryan until he completes a court-ordered rehab and psychiatric evaluation. Second, a complete, uncontested dissolution of marriage with a standard asset division based on the actual value of Silverline Holdings, not the fraudulent numbers you gave the banks. And third..."

I paused, letting the silence hang in the air for a long moment.

"I want Ryan to come here himself and deliver the paperwork. I want him to look at the son he tried to abandon before breakfast and realize exactly what he threw away."

Arthur swallowed hard, his jaw tight. He looked at Victor, who slowly nodded, a grim expression on his face. They had no cards left to play. The empire was built on a foundation of sand, and I had just pulled the plug on the tide.

"Fine," Arthur whispered, turning on his heel. "Victor will prepare the final decree. But you pull those documents from the public record immediately."

"The court records stand, Arthur," I said as he reached the door. "I don't protect criminals anymore. I protect my son."
