Chapter 8 - The Power Grid

The transition back into the corporate world wasn’t just a return to work; it was a coronation. Vanguard Global Compliance gave me the corner office on the twenty-fourth floor of their downtown tower, a space filled with glass and steel that overlooked the very financial district the Calloways had tried so desperately to conquer through deceit.

Mrs. Parker, true to her word, had closed her small suburban practice and joined me as chief legal strategist for the division. Together, we became known within the firm as the "Clean-Up Crew." Companies facing internal corruption or predatory hostile takeovers sought us out because they knew we didn't just look at the numbers—we looked at the human greed driving them.

My life found a beautiful, exhausting, and deeply fulfilling rhythm. Every morning began with Liam’s bright laughter as we had breakfast together. No more cold tiles, no more walking on eggshells around a family that viewed me as an outsider. I had hired a wonderful, warm nanny named Maria, who loved Liam like her own grandson, allowing me to focus completely during my hours at the firm.

One afternoon, Mrs. Parker walked into my office, dropping a fresh file onto my desk. "Claire, we’ve just been approached by a major tech startup, Aethelgard Systems. They’re preparing for an IPO next year, but their internal audit team has flag-checked a series of anomalous capital outflows in their European sectors. The board wants us to handle it before the media gets wind of it."

I opened the folder, my eyes skimming the executive summary. As I read the names of the primary stakeholders, my breath caught slightly.

One of the lead institutional investors backing Aethelgard was Apex Capital Partners—a private equity firm run by a man named Julian Vance, the cousin of Victor Vance, the Calloways' disgraced attorney.

"A small world," I murmured, a slow smile creeping onto my face.

"Too small for coincidences," Mrs. Parker agreed, leaning against the desk. "Julian Vance has managed to keep his hands clean from the Silverline collapse, but his firm absorbed a lot of the Calloways' distressed assets after the auction. If he’s involved in Aethelgard, there’s a high probability he’s using the same playbooks his cousin used."

"They never learn, do they?" I closed the file with a decisive snap. "They think because they changed the company name and the logo, the data won't track them. Let’s book a flight to London for next week, Eleanor. It’s time to see how deep this new rabbit hole goes."

That evening, as I tucked Liam into his crib, I stood by his window, watching the city lights twinkle below. A year ago, I was trapped in a dark kitchen, terrified of the future, holding a two-month-old baby while my life fell apart. Now, I was preparing to fly across the Atlantic to protect a multi-billion-dollar market from the same breed of men who thought they could break me.

I kissed Liam’s forehead. "Your mom is a senior auditor, sweetie," I whispered. "And we always balance the books."
