Chapter 2 - The Silent Weapon

Madeline’s hands shook, but her mind had never been clearer. The agonizing pain in her chest hardened into an icy, unbreakable resolve.
"You want me to deal with him myself?" Madeline's voice was barely a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a razor.
She crawled beneath the coffee table, ignoring the dust, ignoring the horrified gasps of her mother-in-law. Gently, slowly, she reached out. "Liam... my brave boy. Mommy is here. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again."
When her fingers touched his trembling shoulder, Liam flinched violently. But as she began to hum the soft lullaby she had sung to him every night over video calls—the one Jeffrey had claimed Liam "grew out of"—the boy’s frantic breathing slowed. He looked at her, a tiny spark of recognition flickering in his dull, tear-filled eyes. He leaned his matted head against her chest and let out a broken, exhausted sob.
Madeline gathered him into her arms, standing up with her son held tightly against her heart. He felt so terribly light.
"Jeffrey," Madeline said, turning to her husband. "We need to talk about Austin. And Cynthia."
Cynthia rolled her eyes, leaning back into the sofa. "Look, Madeline, let's not make a scene. Jeffrey and I love each other. Austin is his son. You were gone for two years. What did you expect?"
"I expected my husband to not be a spineless coward, and my mother-in-law to not be a child abuser," Madeline said calmly.
Noelle stood up, her face flushed with anger. "How dare you! You abandoned this family for your career! You left us with a broken, silent child. Cynthia has been a real mother to Austin, and a real partner to Jeffrey. If you don't like it, you can leave. But you aren't taking a dime of the company assets. You signed the prenuptial agreement, remember?"
Jeffrey finally spoke, his voice weak but arrogant. "She's right, Madeline. The international expansion in London? You did that as an employee of my family's firm, Harlan Holdings. You have no claim to the profits. Sign the divorce papers, leave the house, and we won't make this ugly."
Madeline almost laughed. "Ugly? You don't even know what ugly looks like yet."
She pulled her phone from her pocket and unlocked the screen.
"Before I left for London, I was paranoid about Liam's safety," Madeline said, her eyes locked on Jeffrey. "So, I installed a hidden, motion-activated nanny cam disguised as a smoke detector in this very living room. It uploads everything directly to a secure cloud server. I haven't checked it in months because you told me the app was glitching. But while I was sitting in the taxi on the way here, I decided to log in."
She pressed play.
A loud, clear recording began to play from her phone's speaker. It was Noelle’s voice, sharp and cruel, from just three days ago:
“Get back under the table, you filthy brat! Don't look at Austin's toys. If you touch them, I’ll lock you in the dark closet again. Jeffrey, tell your son to stop crying, he’s annoying Cynthia.”
Then, Jeffrey’s voice: “Just throw him some crackers on the floor, Mom. He’ll quiet down.”
The color drained from Jeffrey’s face. Noelle gasped, clutching her chest, while Cynthia’s smug smile vanished instantly.

"That's illegal surveillance!" Cynthia shrieked.
"It's my house, purchased with my inheritance," Madeline replied, her voice deadly quiet. "And this recording is going to destroy all of you."
