Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Lie

"What is going on here?" Hannah asked, her soft demeanor instantly hardening into authority as she stepped between row twelve and the aisle.

Evelyn slammed her tray table up. "This child is delusional! She’s making false accusations because her mother is upset about seat assignments! I am a paying first-tier executive traveler! How dare you let a minor interrogate me?!"

"My mom didn't lie about anything," Lucy said, standing up in her seat and looking Evelyn straight in the eyes. "You didn't get 'reassigned' by the gate system, ma'am. I watched you at the gate in Denver. You paid the gate agent's temp worker fifty dollars in cash to bypass the boarding screen so you could get on the plane five minutes early."

Gasps echoed down the cabin.

"You stole my mother's priority seat because her bag was marked with the internal transit tag!" Lucy continued, her voice trembling slightly with righteous anger, but not dropping an inch in clarity. "You knew she had the clearance key for the temperature-controlled medical shipments on this flight!"

I reached row twelve just as Evelyn lunged forward to grab Lucy's notebook.

"Don't you touch her!" I shouted, placing my body between Evelyn and my daughter. Caleb let out a sudden, sharp cry, woken by the noise.

"Ma'am, sit down immediately!" Hannah demanded of Evelyn, reaching for her shoulder radio to signal the lead purser and the cockpit. "Do not reach toward that child!"

Passengers were now standing up in row eleven and row fourteen, pulling out their phones. The man across the aisle spoke up loudly. "Hey, I saw this lady! She was messing with the overhead bins near row twelve before anyone else boarded! She shoved a blue diaper bag out of the way!"

Evelyn’s composure was completely disintegrating. Her polished veneer melted into sharp, bitter panic. "This is absurd! I am Evelyn Vance, senior VP of Vance Logistics! I have every right to my luggage!"

"Then open the briefcase," a deep voice boomed from three rows back.

An off-duty air marshal, who had been sitting quietly in row nine, stood up, displaying his badge. He walked slowly down the aisle, his eyes locked onto the space beneath seat twelve B.

"Open the briefcase under the seat, ma'am. Right now."
