Chapter 2 - The Question That Froze the Cabin

Five minutes later, Hannah, the young flight attendant, came down the aisle pushing the beverage cart.

When she reached row twelve, Evelyn immediately raised a hand, her voice turning crisp and demanding. "A sparkling water with extra ice, please. And tell the captain to turn down the cabin temperature. It’s sweltering in here."

Hannah offered a professional, exhausted smile. "Of course, ma'am." She turned to Lucy. "And for you, sweetheart? A juice?"

"Apple juice, please," Lucy said politely.

As Hannah handed Lucy the plastic cup, Evelyn scoffed audibly. "Honestly, drinks for children who don't even have proper paid tickets in this row. What a waste of flight service."

That was the moment.

Lucy set her apple juice carefully on her tray table. She reached into her navy backpack, pulled out her small notebook, and turned it toward Evelyn.

Then, in a clear, resonant, bell-like voice that cut cleanly through the low hum of the jet engines, Lucy asked her question.

"Excuse me, ma'am? Why does your leather bag have my mom’s legal medical badge on it, and why are you hiding the silver security lock from the Denver airport cargo vault under my feet?"

The entire section of the cabin went dead, absolute silent.

The man across the aisle stopped mid-sip of his coffee. The passenger in front of them turned around. Hannah froze with a soda can held mid-air over the cart.

Evelyn’s face flushed from pale porcelain to a deep, blotchy crimson. "What on earth are you talking about, you absurd child? Shut your mouth!"

"It's not absurd," Lucy said loudly enough for rows ten through sixteen to hear every word. She pointed her pen at the small hardcover notebook. "My mom works as a senior dispatch manager for air freight. Before we boarded, she showed me how cargo locks work. That silver strap under your heel is a Restricted Customs Seal #412. It belongs to the specialized medical transport crate that came off the feeder plane from Chicago."

Lucy reached deeper into her backpack and pulled out a laminated card. "And this is my mom's duplicate ID. The leather bag you took from the overhead bin before we sat down has her exact name tag—Clara Brooks—tucked under your handle."

In row fifteen, my heart nearly stopped. I stood up, holding Caleb tightly against my chest, and stepped into the aisle.
