Chapter 4 - The Strike at Pier 42

Dawn broke over Seattle, painting the cold waters of Puget Sound in pale shades of gray and bruised violet.

The abandoned shipping yard on Pier 42 looked desolate from a distance, but through the infrared scopes of the tactical unit stationed a hundred yards away, the perimeter was heavily secured by armed mercenaries hired by the rogue corporate syndicate.

Nathan sat inside the command van, his face illuminated by the harsh blue light of tactical maps. Beside him sat Lily, safely tucked away in the armored transport with her guardian, while a heavily armed security detail awaited his final command.

"Sir, we have visual confirmation of the primary target inside Warehouse C," whispered Marcus, the head of corporate security, pointing to a thermal feed on his monitor. "Dr. Catherine is being held near the central loading dock. There are four armed hostiles guarding the exit."

Nathan checked the clip of his sidearm, sliding it into his holster with a sharp, metallic click. The tech billionaire who usually spent his days balancing quarterly earnings and software releases was entirely gone. In his place stood a man ready to tear down an empire to reclaim his family.

"Move in," Nathan ordered quietly. "Take out the perimeter guards silently. Leave the primary target for me."

The raid was executed with military precision. Within ninety seconds, the outer gates were breached, flash-bang grenades echoed through the cavernous metal warehouse, and the mercenaries were neutralized before they even had time to raise their weapons.

Nathan kicked open the heavy double doors of the inner sanctum, his boots slamming against the concrete floor.

"Catherine!" he shouted, sweeping his weapon across the room.

In the center of the dilapidated office space, tied to a metal chair with industrial zip-ties, sat Catherine. Her head was bowed, but at the sound of his voice, she snapped her eyes upward.

"Nathan!" she gasped, straining against her bonds.

Before Nathan could reach her, a heavy shadow detached itself from behind a stacked pallet of shipping crates. A man—Director Vance, one of Neurosoft’s senior board members—stepped out, holding a small, cold pistol pressed directly against Catherine's temple.

"Drop the weapon, Mr. Wells!" Vance yelled, his face slick with panic, his finger twitching nervously on the trigger. "Drop it or she dies right here!"

Nathan froze, lowering his sidearm a few inches, his eyes locked on Vance's shaking hand. "It's over, Vance. The federal indictment has already been transmitted to the Department of Justice. Every server file you tried to steal is sitting on a secure master drive in my possession. You have nowhere to run."

"I don't need to run!" Vance shrieked, pressing the barrel harder against Catherine's temple. "If I go down, I'm taking your precious wife with me—"

Crack.

A single, sharp report echoed through the warehouse.

It wasn't Nathan’s gun.

Director Vance’s eyes widened in utter shock. The pistol slipped from his fingers as he staggered backward, collapsing hard onto the concrete floor, neutralized by a precise, long-range sniper round fired through the high warehouse skylight by one of Nathan’s elite extraction specialists.

Silence rushed back into the room.

Nathan dropped his weapon, sprinting across the floor in two long strides. He grabbed a pocket knife from his belt, slicing through the heavy zip-ties binding Catherine's wrists and ankles.

The moment she was free, Catherine threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder as she let out a broken, shuddering sob.

"You came," she whispered fiercely against his skin. "You found me."

"I told you," Nathan murmured, his arms wrapped around her so tightly as if he never intended to let go again. "Nothing keeps me away from you. Not an empire, and certainly not a lie."
