Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Code

Two hours later, the motorcade pulled up to the high-security subterranean headquarters of Neurosoft. The massive steel blast doors slid open automatically, recognizing Nathan’s biometric authorization.
Instead of heading to his executive office on the upper floors, Nathan marched straight down to Level 5—the heavily guarded core server room, where the company's most sensitive neural interface protocols were processed.
He seated himself at the main console, slotting the metallic data drive into the master terminal.
Access Granted: Project Chimera.
Lines of complex code scrolled across the three massive curved monitors in a blinding cascade of green text. But right beneath the primary mainframe directory sat an unencrypted video file labeled with a single word: NATHAN.
With a trembling finger, Nathan clicked play.
The screen flickered to life. The camera framing was shaky, recorded on what looked like an encrypted mobile device in a dimly lit, concrete-walled room. Catherine appeared on the screen. She looked thinner, her hair pulled back hastily, pale bruises fading along her jawline, but her dark eyes burned with an intense, fierce intelligence.
"Nathan," Catherine's voice whispered from the speakers, rich and alive, filling the silent server room. "If you're watching this, it means Lily reached you safely, and our children are whole."
Nathan reached out, his fingertips grazing the cold glass of the monitor as if he could touch her face.
"I didn't leave because I wanted to," Catherine continued, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. "Three months ago, I discovered that our chief financial officer had been siphoning Neurosoft's neural-mapping data to a clandestine military contractor. When I tried to lock down the firewall, they kidnapped me. They threatened to detonate a digital sabotage payload that would wipe out the neural implants of every pediatric patient currently using our hardware—including our own children's preliminary diagnostic profiles."
A cold sweat broke out across Nathan's neck. The betrayal wasn't external; it was rotting from inside the executive board.
"I had to fake my death to buy time," Catherine said, her voice dropping to a fierce, resolute register. "I spent the last ninety days dismantling their secondary nodes from the inside, moving children like Lily out of their black-site testing facilities, and securing the master decryption keys. The file you're holding right now contains the complete digital footprint of every conspirator involved—from the board members to the federal handlers."
She paused, looking directly into the lens, her eyes softening.

"I am so close, Nathan. Just a few more days to secure the final physical ledger at the abandoned shipping yard on Pier 42. Tell the twins their mother loves them. Protect Lily. And get ready."
The video cut to black.
