Chapter 5 - The King's Choice

The fallout from the gala was catastrophic for the high-society sharks, but a massive victory for Cole Industries. The stock didn't drop; it soared. Public perception shifted overnight, painting me not as a reclusive eccentric, but as a righteous leader who had purged his own company of corruption while protecting the vulnerable.
Three days later, the mansion was completely quiet again. The vultures were gone, and my mother was facing a minimum of ten years in a federal facility.
I stood on the back terrace, a cup of coffee in my hand, looking out over the Hudson River. The morning sun cast a golden light across the massive lawn.
"Efan!"
A familiar, joyful voice broke the silence. I turned to see Lily running across the grass, her bright yellow sundress fluttering in the breeze. She crashed into my legs, laughing so hard she almost knocked my coffee over.
"Look! The tree is waiting!" she giggled, pointing toward the old oak tree at the edge of the estate where our story had begun.
Maria walked up behind her, looking peaceful for the first time since I met her. The fear in her eyes was completely gone, replaced by a deep, radiant warmth.
"The lawyers called, Ethan," Maria said softly, stepping next to me on the terrace. "The foundation has been completely restructured. They want to name the new pediatric wing in the city after Lily."
"It's the least they can do," I said, putting my coffee down and wrapping my arm around Maria's waist. She didn't pull away; she leaned into my side, her head resting gently against my shoulder.
"I still can't believe all of this," she whispered, looking out over the river. "A week ago, I was a maid scrubbing your floors, terrified of losing my job. Now... you've changed our entire world."
"No, Maria," I said, turning her to face me, my hands resting on her shoulders. "You changed mine. I had seventeen bedrooms, three private jets, and a billion dollars, but I was dying of loneliness in this house. You and Lily gave me a reason to wake up in the morning. You gave me a family."

Lily tugged on my pant leg, looking up at us with her big, honey-colored eyes. "Group hug!" she demanded.
I laughed, kneeling down on the stone patio, pulling both Maria and Lily into a tight, warm embrace. As I held them close, the vibrating of the phone in my pocket didn't matter anymore. The meetings could wait. The empire could run itself. For the first time in thirty-four years, I knew exactly who I was, and I knew exactly what mattered.
