Chapter 1 - The Shadow at the Door

The front door of my cold, seventeen-bedroom mansion didn't just open; it slammed against the marble wall, the echo vibrating through the grand foyer like a gunshot.
The laughter in the playroom died instantly. Lily froze, a blue wooden block hovering in her tiny hand, her honey-colored eyes wide with sudden alarm. Maria, who had been leaning against the doorframe with a soft smile, straightened up, her face draining of color as heavy, rhythmic footsteps clicked across the hardwood.
"Ethan!" a sharp, aristocratic voice barked.
My mother, Eleanor Cole, stepped into the room. She was draped in a designer trench coat, her diamonds catching the morning light, her face sculpted into a mask of pure disapproval. Behind her stood my assistant, looking completely panicked, clutching her tablet to her chest like a shield.
"I knew it," Eleanor sneered, her eyes sweeping over me. I was still sitting cross-legged on the rug, my custom-tailored trousers wrinkled, a plastic toy crown tilted on my head from Lily’s imaginary game. "Your assistant told me you were neglecting a multi-million-dollar Seattle acquisition, but I didn't believe her. I had to see this madness with my own eyes."
Her gaze dropped to Lily, then flicked to Maria standing in the corner. Eleanor's lip curled in disgust. "What is this? Are we running a public daycare now? Who allowed these servants to bring their baggage into the main house?"
"Mother, watch your mouth," I said, standing up slowly. The easygoing, laughing man from a moment ago vanished, replaced by the fierce, unyielding billionaire who ran an empire. "Maria is an employee here, and Lily is my guest. You will speak to them with respect."
"Respect?" Eleanor let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Ethan, look at yourself! Your father is rolling in his grave. While your competitors are expanding their portfolios, you are playing on the floor with the maid's child! Do you have any idea what the high-society blogs will say if a photo of this gets out? They’ll think you've lost your mind—or worse, that you're being blackmailed by the staff."
Maria swallowed hard, her knuckles turning white as she clutched her cleaning apron. "Mr. Cole... I'm so sorry. I'll take Lily and leave. I didn't mean to cause trouble."
"You're not going anywhere, Maria," I commanded, my voice echoing with an authority that even made my mother blink.
But Lily didn't understand the corporate politics or the social hierarchy. She only knew that the mean lady in the fancy coat was making her mother cry. The brave little girl scrambled to her feet, ran across the room, and planted herself right in front of my legs, glaring up at Eleanor.
"No bad words to Efan!" Lily pouted, stamping her bare foot.
Eleanor gasped, stepping back as if Lily were a stray animal. "Get that creature away from me! Ethan, I am giving you an ultimatum. Fire this woman and get your head back in the game, or I will call an emergency meeting of the board. Your father left me enough voting shares to declare you unfit to run Cole Industries. I will not watch you destroy our legacy for a sob story."

I looked down at Lily, who was now gripping my hand, her tiny fingers offering more warmth than my family had given me in a lifetime. I looked back at my mother, her face twisted by greed and vanity.
"Then call the board, Mother," I whispered, a dangerous smile touching my lips. "Let's see who they choose: the man who doubled the company's net worth in five years, or the woman who hasn't stepped foot in a boardroom since 1998."
