Chapter 4 - Blood and Promises

The heavy wooden front door of the apartment splintered violently as a sledgehammer struck the deadbolt from the outside.

Dominic stood in the center of the living room, his feet planted firmly on the worn rug, his 9mm raised with absolute precision.

He didn't panic. He didn't sweat. The chaos of combat was a territory he had walked for twenty years. But tonight, the stakes were different. Tonight, behind the bathroom door fifteen feet away, slept his entire reason for existing.

CRASH!

The front door burst inward, sending wood splinters flying across the linoleum.

A heavy-set hitman wearing a black tactical vest burst through the threshold, an automatic shotgun leveled at Dominic’s chest.

Dominic fired before the man could raise his barrel.

BANG!

The round hit the hitman directly in the throat. The man collapsed backward into the hallway, knocking down the second attacker who was right behind him.

Dominic stepped forward, using the fallen body as a tactical shield, leaning out into the hallway and firing three controlled shots down the stairwell.

Shouts and curses echoed up the narrow stairs as the remaining attackers scrambled for cover.

"He's got the doorway locked down!" a voice yelled from below. "Throw a flashbang!"

Dominic’s eyes widened. A flashbang in this small hallway would blind him and destroy the apartment, filling the back room with toxic smoke.

"Falcone!" Dominic shouted down the stairs, his voice echoing through the building like thunder. "You throw that, and I execute Victor Vescari’s brother by midnight! I know where he lives in Miami!"

The hallway went dead silent.

A second passed. Then two.

"You're bluffing, Moretti!" Falcone’s voice called back from the landing below. "You don't have your network here!"

"Try me!" Dominic growled. "Call Victor right now. Ask him if he wants to trade his brother’s life for a Brooklyn walk-up!"

Down in the street below, the sudden, deafening roar of heavy diesel engines shattered the night air.

Tires screeched as three massive, armor-plated black SUVs pulled up onto the sidewalk directly outside the building. Heavy car doors slammed shut in rapid succession, followed by the distinct, terrifying sound of dozens of automatic rifle bolts being racked back simultaneously.

Marco’s voice finally burst through Dominic’s earpiece, loud and clear:

"Boss! We cleared the signal jammers! The entire Long Island division is outside! We have the building surrounded!"

Dominic smiled—a cold, lethal smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Falcone," Dominic called out down the dark stairs. "My men are in the lobby. You have ten seconds to drop your weapons, or none of you leave this stairwell alive."

A heavy silence hung over the narrow hallway.

Then came the sharp, metallic sounds of submachine guns being dropped onto the wooden floorboards.

Five seconds later, Marco and eight heavily armed Moretti enforcers stormed up the stairs, swarming the landing, securing the surviving Vescari hitmen without firing another shot.

Marco burst into the apartment, his rifle raised, scanning the room before lowering his barrel.

"Boss!" Marco gasped, checking Dominic for injuries. "Are you hit?"

"I'm fine," Dominic said, lowering his handgun and placing it back into his shoulder holster. "Clear the body from the doorway. Get two SUVs ready out front."

"Right away, sir."

Dominic walked down the narrow hallway toward the bathroom door. He knocked gently on the wood three times—a specific, soft rhythm.

"Sophia," he called out softly. "It's over. It's safe."

The brass lock clicked inside. The door slowly swung open.

Sophia stood in the dim light, holding Lily tightly in her arms. The child had her face buried in her mother's neck, her small hands clutching Sophia’s shirt.

Sophia looked at Dominic, her wide brown eyes taking in his rumpled suit, the faint smudge of gunpowder on his cheek, and the absolute, unyielding security of the armed men visible in the hallway behind him.

She didn't ask questions. She didn't yell.

She simply stepped out of the bathroom and walked straight into Dominic’s arms.

Dominic wrapped his long arms around both of them, pulling Sophia and Lily tight against his chest. He closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of lavender and baby powder, feeling the warm, steady heartbeat of his daughter against his ribs.

"I've got you," Dominic whispered into Sophia’s hair. "I've got both of you."

Sophia buried her face in his shoulder, weeping silently, letting go of six years of exhaustion and fear.

"You can't stay here anymore, Sophia," Dominic said gently, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes. "Vescari knows where you live now. This place isn't safe."

Sophia nodded slowly, looking around the small, ruined apartment—the broken window, the tea-stained floor, the splintered front door.

"Where do we go?" she whispered.

Dominic looked down at Lily, who opened her eyes and looked up at him with wide, trusting curiosity.

"Home," Dominic said softly. "You're coming home with me."
