Chapter 3 - The Broken Treaty

By midnight, the apartment was completely quiet, save for the soft humming of the old radiator in the corner.
Lily was fast asleep in her room. Dominic stood near the living room window, his dark eyes scanning the quiet street below through a gap in the lace curtains.
Sophia walked out of the kitchen, holding two steaming mugs of tea. She approached him cautiously, offering one of the mugs.
"It's chamomile," she said quietly. "You look like you haven't slept in a week."
Dominic turned, accepting the mug. His fingers brushed against hers, sending a sharp, electric jolt through both of them. Sophia quickly pulled her hand back, stepping back to maintain her distance.
"Thank you," Dominic said, taking a small sip. "She's a wonderful child, Sophia. You raised her beautifully."
"I raised her alone," Sophia reminded him, her voice cool and guarded. "Without your money, without your name, and without your guards."
"I know," Dominic said, turning to face her fully. "And I will spend the rest of my life regretting that I wasn't here for it."
Sophia leaned against the small dining table, crossing her arms. "You don't get to regret it, Dominic. You chose this. You made your choice six years ago when you pushed me out of that Manhattan office."
"I pushed you away because Victor Vescari had just put a bomb under my sister's car!" Dominic's voice rose in a fierce, sudden whisper, his gray eyes burning with old pain. "Do you have any idea what would have happened if he found out about you?! He would have skinned you alive to make me sign over the docks! I had to make you hate me, Sophia! I had to make sure you ran as far away from me as possible!"
Sophia stared at him, her lips parting in shock.
"A bomb?" she whispered.
"Victor Vescari is a psychopath," Dominic continued, his hands tightening around the tea mug. "He doesn't care about rules. He doesn't care about families. He kills women, children, anyone who can give him an advantage. The day I told you that you were just entertainment... I had spent three hours washing my sister's blood off my hands. I loved you so much it terrified me. You were my only weakness. So I cut you out like a tumor to keep you breathing."
Sophia stood frozen, the truth crashing over her like a tidal wave.
For six years, she had carried the deep, agonizing shame of believing she had been nothing more than a temporary toy for a rich, ruthless man. She had hated him, cursed his name, and wept herself to sleep in cheap apartments, believing her love had meant nothing to him.
To find out now—after six years of bitter grief—that his cruelty had been an act of ultimate sacrifice... it shattered every foundation she had built her anger upon.
"Dominic..." she breathed, taking a step toward him. "You... you should have told me..."
"If I told you, you would have stayed," Dominic said softly. "You were too stubborn to leave. You would have insisted on staying by my side, and you would have ended up in a grave."
Sophia swallowed hard, her eyes brimming with tears. "So you suffered alone?"
"I deserved to suffer," Dominic said flatly. "But I saved your life. And tonight... I realized I saved my daughter's life too."
Before Sophia could answer, a sudden, heavy thud echoed from the fire escape outside the kitchen window.
Dominic dropped his mug to the floor. It shattered into a dozen pieces, dark tea pooling across the linoleum.
In a fraction of a second, Dominic pulled his silver 9mm handgun from his shoulder holster, pushing Sophia behind him with his left arm.
"Marco!" Dominic barked into his lapel microphone. "We have breached security! Kitchen window!"
Only static answered him.
"Marco! Report!"
Silence.
"Dominic, what's happening?" Sophia gasped, her hands clutching the back of his suit jacket in pure terror.
"They cut the comms," Dominic said, his voice dropping into an icy, lethal calm. "Stay behind me. Do not step out from behind this wall."
The glass of the kitchen window shattered violently.
A iron crowbar smashed through the frame, followed by a heavy leather boot kicking the wooden frame inward. A tall, masked man dressed in tactical gear scrambled through the window, a silenced submachine gun raised in his hands.
Dominic didn't hesitate.
BANG! BANG!
Two loud shots shattered the quiet of the apartment.
The intruder collapsed instantly onto the kitchen linoleum, his weapon skittering across the floor.
Sophia screamed, covering her ears, stepping back into the hallway toward Lily's room.
"LILY!" Sophia cried out.
"Get in her room! Lock the door!" Dominic roared, stepping toward the kitchen, his weapon trained on the broken window.
Outside on the fire escape, two more figures appeared in the moonlight.
"Moretti!" a voice shouted from the darkness outside—a harsh, raspy voice that Dominic recognized instantly. "Give us the girl and the woman, and you walk out of here alive!"
Dominic’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, murderous rage.
It was Victor Vescari’s chief enforcer—a ruthless hitman known as Falcone.
"Falcone," Dominic growled, stepping into the open kitchen, firing three rapid shots through the window frame, forcing the men on the fire escape to duck for cover. "You stepped into the wrong neighborhood tonight."
"You made a mistake coming here alone, Boss Moretti!" Falcone taunted from the dark fire escape. "Your guards outside are tied up! You have five men coming up the front stairs right now!"
Dominic’s mind raced at lightning speed.
Five men on the stairs. Two on the fire escape. He had twelve rounds left in his magazine, no spare clips, and a woman and child locked in the back bedroom.
He was trapped.
Dominic turned back to the hallway. Sophia was standing near Lily's bedroom door, holding the small girl in her arms, both of them paralyzed with fear.
Dominic walked over to them. He looked into Sophia's terrified eyes, then down at Lily, who was crying into her mother's neck.
"Sophia," Dominic said softly, his voice steady, calm, and utterly devoid of fear. "Take Lily into the bathroom. The walls are reinforced brick. Lock the door and don't come out until I open it."
"Dominic, no!" Sophia wept, grabbing his collar. "They're going to kill you!"
Dominic reached up, gentlycupping her face with his hand, brushing his thumb across her tear-stained cheek.
May you like
"They can't kill me tonight, Sophia," Dominic whispered, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead. "I just found my family."
He pulled away, turned toward the front door as heavy footsteps began pounding up the wooden stairs outside, and prepared to fight for the only things in the world that mattered.
