Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The scene inside the warehouse descended into swift, decisive action.

The private security guards immediately dropped their weapons, throwing their hands into the air and dropping to their knees. Gordon Pike stood paralyzed in the blinding glare of the police spotlights, his face pale, his arms hanging limp at his sides.

Captain Thomas walked up to Pike, snatched the gold COMMUNITY CARE pin from his suit lapel, threw it onto the concrete floor, and crushed it beneath his boot. He shoved Pike against the side of a delivery truck, pulling his hands roughly behind his back to slap on heavy steel handcuffs.

"You have the right to remain silent," Thomas growled into Pike’s ear. "And I strongly suggest you use it."

Sarah lowered her weapon, leaning heavily against a wooden crate as the surge of adrenaline finally began to recede from her body.

Captain Thomas walked over to Sarah, looking at her bruised face, her wet clothes, and the black ledger clutched securely in her hand.

"You broke about fourteen department protocols tonight, Mitchell," Thomas said, his voice stern, though a faint hint of pride glittered in his eyes.

"I did what I had to do, Captain," Sarah said quietly. "The warrant Vance had was fraudulent. They were going to kill Emily."

Thomas sighed, taking the black ledger from her hands and inspecting the pages. "The FBI received an anonymous digital transmission of your 911 dispatch audio twenty minutes ago, along with a full copy of the forged manifests. Lena, the cashier from the store, walked into the main precinct with a hidden drive containing three years of Gordon Pike’s internal emails."

Sarah smiled faintly. "Lena. I knew she was braver than she looked."

"The District Attorney has already revoked Judge Holbrook’s bench privileges," Thomas continued. "Arthur Vance is currently being brought in for questioning regarding conspiracy and evidence tampering. Michael Carter’s name is clear, Sarah. Completely clear."

Sarah turned around toward the elevator platform. "Noah," she called softly. "It’s safe now. Come on out."

Noah stepped out from behind the wooden control box. He looked at the vast sea of police officers, the flashing lights, and Gordon Pike being led away in chains.

Captain Thomas knelt down in front of the small boy, taking off his own police cap and placing it on Noah’s head. "You’re a brave kid, Noah. Your father would be unbelievably proud of you."

Noah looked up at Sarah, tears shining in his eyes. "Is my mom okay?"

Sarah knelt down beside him, wrapping her arm around his small shoulders. "Let's go find out."
