Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes

Sarah stood up slowly, positioning herself between the lawyer and Emily’s bed. "This is an active criminal investigation, Mr. Vance. You have no authority to interrupt my witness questioning."
Vance offered a dry, razor-thin smile. He pulled a folded legal document from his leather briefcase and handed it to Sarah. "On the contrary, Detective. Mrs. Emily Carter is currently under formal arrest for grand theft, extortion, and corporate espionage. The warrant was signed twenty minutes ago by Judge Holbrook."
Sarah stared at the document in disbelief. "Grand theft? Over forty dollars of groceries?"
"Forty dollars of groceries was the initial observation," Vance replied smoothly. "Upon an immediate audit of our digital records—which were restored shortly after your departure—we discovered that Mrs. Carter unlawfully accessed proprietary corporate servers from the back office terminal while detained. She attempted to exfiltrate confidential trade secrets."
"That’s a lie!" Emily cried, trying to sit up, her heart monitor beginning to beep rapidly. "I didn't touch any computer! I was locked in a chair!"
"Mom, don't move!" Noah screamed, clinging to her arm.
"Officers," Vance said to the two patrolmen standing behind him, "take the suspect into custody. The hospital staff has cleared her for transport to the county medical ward."
"She’s in premature labor, you monster!" Sarah barked, stepping directly into the path of the officers. "Look at her! She can barely stand!"
"She can lay in the infirmary at the county facility just as easily as she can lay here," Vance replied calmly. "And as for the child... Child Protective Services has been notified that the mother is unfit and facing felony charges. An agent is on their way to take custody of Noah Carter."
Noah let out a terrified shriek, hiding his face in his mother’s chest.
Sarah’s mind raced. Pike didn't just want Emily quieted; he wanted her completely isolated, locked away in a county medical ward where no independent journalists or detectives could reach her, while Noah was dragged into the labyrinth of the foster system where he could be easily intimidated.
"Not on my watch," Sarah said, her hand dropping instinctively toward her belt.
"Careful, Detective Mitchell," Vance warned, his voice turning ice-cold. "Interfering with the execution of a signed judicial warrant is a felony. It will cost you your badge, your career, and your freedom. Stand aside."
Sarah looked at Emily, whose eyes were wide with total terror. Then she looked down at Noah, who was shaking violently.
She knew that if Emily was moved to the county medical ward under Pike's influence, she might never walk out alive. And if Noah was taken, the last piece of Michael Carter's legacy would be destroyed.
Sarah took a deep breath. She backed down slowly, unhooking her cuffs from her belt. "Fine," she said, her tone deceptively compliant. "Let me at least walk the boy out to the hallway so he doesn't have to watch this."
Vance hesitated, then gave a brief nod. "Two minutes, Detective. Do not leave the floor."
Sarah took Noah by the hand and guided him out of the room. As soon as the heavy wooden door swung shut behind them, Sarah leaned down, looking directly into the boy's eyes.
"Noah," she whispered fiercely. "Do you trust me?"
Noah wiped his nose, nodding slowly.
"I need you to take this," Sarah whispered, slipping her personal car keys into his jacket pocket alongside the brass key marked 407. "You’re going to walk down the fire stairs at the end of the hall. Go out the side entrance to the parking lot. My car is a silver Ford, license plate 7-X-RAY-9. Lock yourself in the back seat and don't open the door for anyone except me. Do you understand?"
"What about Mom?" Noah choked out.
"I’m going to save your mom," Sarah said firmly. "But I can't do it if they have you. Go now. Run!"
May you like
Noah looked back at the room one last time, then turned and darted toward the red exit sign at the end of the corridor.
Sarah turned back toward Room 312, drawing a heavy breath, preparing to burn down her entire professional career to pull off the ultimate gamble.
