Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Lock 407

Sarah walked back into the room, her hands raised empty.

Vance glanced past her into the hall. "Where is the child?"

"He went to the bathroom down the hall with a pediatric nurse," Sarah said casually, leaning her back against the heavy doorframe. "He'll be back in a minute."

"We don't have time for this," Vance snapped, gesturing to the officers. "Cuff her."

"Wait," Sarah said, her voice dropping an octave, dead serious. "Before you do that, Vance, you might want to call Gordon Pike and ask him if he knows what was inside lockbox 407 at the old Union Rail Depot."

Vance froze. For a fraction of a second, his polished composure cracked. His eyes flicked nervously toward Sarah’s vest. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the secondary ledger Michael Carter kept," Sarah lied smoothly, gambling everything on the brass key in Noah's pocket. "The one detailing the off-the-books bribes paid to Judge Holbrook to sign warrants just like the one you’re holding. You think I came here straight from the grocery store? I’ve already secured the physical evidence."

Vance’s face darkened into a dangerous sneer. "You’re bluffing, Mitchell. You haven't been near the rail depot."

"Try me," Sarah said, pulling out her phone and tapping the screen. "In roughly forty-five seconds, an encrypted upload of that ledger hits the State Attorney General’s internal server. Unless, of course, you void that warrant and leave Mrs. Carter in medical custody right here where she belongs."

The silence in the hospital room was deafening. The two patrol officers looked back and forth between Sarah and the high-priced corporate lawyer, sensing the ground shifting beneath their feet.

Vance’s phone began to vibrate in his breast pocket. He pulled it out, saw the caller ID, and immediately answered. "Pike? What is it?"

Sarah couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but she saw Vance’s jaw tighten until the skin over his cheekbones turned white.

"Understood," Vance muttered into the phone. He lowered the device, looking at Sarah with pure venom. "It seems there has been a administrative delay regarding the processing of the warrant, Detective. Mrs. Carter will remain under hospital watch until tomorrow morning. But do not think for a single second that you have won this."

"Get out of my crime scene," Sarah commanded.

Vance turned on his heel and swept out of the room, followed closely by the bewildered patrolmen.

Sarah didn't waste a second. She rushed to Emily’s bedside. "Emily, they’re going to figure out I’m bluffing within the hour. I need to know where that key goes. It’s marked 407. Is it the rail depot?"

Emily shook her head weakly, her eyes wide with fear. "No... no, Michael never used the rail depot. He worked the night shifts at the central logistics hub on 5th Street. Lock 407 is the old employee storage locker in the basement beneath the loading docks!"

"The loading docks at Pike Logistics," Sarah muttered.

"Sarah, please," Emily sobbed, clutching Sarah’s forearm. "If Gordon finds out what’s in that locker, he’ll destroy it. Michael died protecting those papers. It’s the only thing that proves he was innocent!"

"I'm going to get those papers," Sarah vowed. "I’m going to take Noah, go to that warehouse, and end this tonight."

She unclipped her badge from her belt and laid it gently on the nightstand beside Emily.

"What are you doing?" Emily asked, staring at the golden star.

"If I go into that private warehouse without a warrant, I'm committing a felony," Sarah said softly, offering a brave, faint smile. "I can't do that as a police officer. But I can do it as Michael’s friend."
